    The day of humiliation, and the doubter's cry,

    And one pretext deferred by another.

    Why question, when the breast is brimming

    With grievous pains and ailments?

    The soul is wounded by time's hardship,

    And the heart is hollow from the sorrow of calamities.

    And memory's tragedies are a passing phantom,

    Whose outlines a hazy mirage conceals.

    Woe to you, day, in the gloom of whose night

    The fool went blind, while he who feigned folly saw!

    Twenty years have passed, and you have been nothing,

    O day, but the doubter's doubt.

    And do you not have two faces: one smiling

    For them, and one with fangs laid bare?

    They entered your land as conquerors, and you protected them,

    And made us taste, O day, bitter torment.

    How ill-omened the world, with your memory laden

    With the horrors of severed limbs and plunder!

    My anguish for the dear homeland, humiliated

    By the enemy's promise and the swing of the keen-edged sword!

    His false promise tells you of his deceit.

    Oh, that enemy and his lying promise!

    He conquered the land and said, “You are its people,

    O choicest of allies and beloved friends.

    Our hopes are your hopes, and our hearts

    Beat madly with longing for the Bedouin Arabs.”

    Until, when times grew grave and hope stirred

    In the Bedouin Arabs for spoils from a plunderer,

    The enemy scoffed; and in the bitterness of his scoffing

    Lay the mockery of the deceptive, beguiling mirage.

    او ما رأيت السم في الاكواب

    Deceit drips from the creases of his face;

    Or have you not seen the poison in the cups?

    My anguish for a homeland whose people are torn between

    The frivolity of the heads and the abasement of the tails.

    ومصارع الاخلاق والآداب

    Rancor and hatred are but some of its woes,

    And the downfall of morals and manners;

    موؤدة وتناحر الاحزاب

    And the confusion of divided opinion, and dignity

    Buried alive, and parties at one another's throats;

    وفتور اشياخ ونوم شباب

    And mutual shirking in calamities, and humiliation,

    And the apathy of elders and the slumber of youth;

    And sycophancy—or have you not seen our notables,

    Their heads walking upon the thresholds?

    The people wade in their blood, while those men wade—

    Woe to them—in tea and cups.

    And blunted resolves, and problems

    Whose evidence leaves no need for elaboration.

    Day of humiliation, you reopened a bleeding wound,

    And with the painful memory stirred what ails me.

    And took me back twenty years, all of them

    Racking pain and prolonged torment.

    We seek deliverance, while you are a silent mystery,

    Gazing at us from behind a veil.

    What dark pages lie beyond you,

    Which the nights fold away in the clamorous morrow?

    The good in your near tomorrow lies hidden

    In the grave, while evil is at the doors.

    And death watches the departing, whose lives

    Are a burden to enemies and friends.

    ذهبت بميعة صبوتي وشبابي

    Your memory, O day of humiliation, is bitter;

    It carried away the bloom of my youthful ardor and youth.

    ما زال في الميدان بعض صعاب

    O you who conquered Jerusalem, not so fast—it is not over;

    Some difficulties still remain in the field.

    Between you, Allenby, and us there remains

    An unsettled account in this world.

    These are the inherited elements of our hatred

    For you, and we bequeath them to posterity.

    انا ورثناها عن الاحقاب

    Do not ask us to explain their causes;

    Indeed, we inherited them from ages past.

    Time is a wheel that turns, and you

    Turn with us, along with the wheel.
