Strange—does longing drive me toward you?
Strange! Does longing urge me toward you,
And in my whispers are a sigh and a moan.
While my whispers hold a sigh and a moan?

O my poetry, my soul be your ransom! In me is ardent longing
For you! Yet time is miserly.
For you; and yet time is miserly.

And how can one speak verse whose chest lies all night
Upon his heart, with illness buried there?
Upon his heart, with illness buried within?

For if he seeks a breath from the world of mortality,
A cold blocks his nose, then fails him.
A nasal cold blocks him, then betrays him.

For fear of a thing that is and is yet to be.

And amid the body's motions, it brings stillness.
And in the body's movements is stillness caused by it.

The world of his thought grows dark and loses worth.
So the world of his thought darkens and loses worth.

And bodily illness is felled by a malady whose mildest form
A vacant stupor, with madness in one of its two hands.
Is dazed brooding, and one of its two respites is madness.
