1. فانحنى نحوه قليلاً فالفى

    شبح الموت فوقه في خفوقِ

    So he bent a little toward him and found

    The specter of death fluttering above him.

  2. ورأى عارضين غارا شحوبا

    ورأى ناظرين دون بريق

    And he saw two cheeks, sunken and pale,

    And he saw two eyes without a gleam.

  3. كان فيه من الحياة بصيص

    من ضياء يسير نحو الزهوق

    There was in him a glimmer of life,

    Of light moving toward extinction.

  4. فهو ما زال ويح قلبي عليه

    في صراع مع الممات المحيق

    For he was still—alas for my heart over him!—

    In a struggle with engulfing death.
