I was told: Sing of the homeland,

    poet of love and sorrow.

    Layla and Azza

and the fawn have long been dead.

    So leave love and passion,

    and leave sorrow and grief.

    My homeland—ah, my homeland!

Your lovely memory has stirred my longing.

I am a passionate lover, enthralled

by you, O enchantment of enchantments.

    Whenever you cross my mind,

I am stirred, in secret and in public.

    And a tremor overtakes me,

    Then a sigh rose

from a blaze, and I said: Who—

    who sees love alighting

in the homeland and then does not go mad?

    It is love, my homeland;

    it is love, hidden within.

O sons of my people, enough

of reproaching one enchanted by the homeland.

    I, my people—if I am

    remiss, then ask the grudges,

    and ask humiliation and lassitude,

    and ask weakness and frailty,

    and ask love's intoxication,

and ask the greenery of dung heaps.

And listen now to a story,

    a story that awakens sorrow.

in the winding recesses of a tavern,

embraced by a fawn with a soft, nasal voice,

one of the daughters of those who filled

the plains and the rugged ground.

    Young men—alas for their day!—

    who defied religion and tradition.

    that roused weakness within them.

peaks that towered above all peaks.

    their sleep; then drowsiness withdrew,

    wine's wetness and stench.

So in their garments they appeared

    like madmen in shrouds.

One of them said to another,

    staring fixedly like an idol:

Friend, what has happened to us?

    It is sorcery and enchantments!

    and hide our cups,

cleansing the air and the dung heaps.

    Youths of the cup, enough!

And shed a tear of resentment,

    and mourn a nation's lot,

ravaged by the scourge of ordeals.

    It is a spark of guidance;

it is the law of laws.
