I am a phantom; I see my state as no state at all,

    and a dead thought—rather, a worn-out notion.

I gaze at myself, and find nothing but a specter,

shattered, wrapped in shrouds of rags,

trembling like a bewildered feather on a string,

its tune discordant, amid laughter and wailing.

Time's calamities assail me, playing havoc

with my heart, my thought, my soul, and my mind.

And longings beguile me, only to be struck down

by my soul; my longings and hopes perish.

And a slender-waisted gazelle entices my beating heart,

so I ward it off with an exposed, empty heart.

And ardent yearnings and imaginings seize me,

and memories of my bygone, vanished youth.

I mean to advance, but faith carries me backward.

Oh, my bewilderment between my retreat and my advance!

And my anguish, as the hopes of a lifetime fade,

scattered, victims of neglect and disregard!

And my regret, as time's sorrows impel me

and carry the soul from one state to another!

And people—what are people? What does their existence mean?

What have I to do with people in these worlds—what have I to do with them?

They have, my brother, threadbare follies,

appearing to their beholder in the worst of garb.

And among their follies is my retreat into a tunnel,

my mind scattered between hearsay and gossip.

They consider me a madman afflicted with bewilderment,

yet I am simply a poet of a lofty kind.

Through the eye of poetic imagination, I see at a glance

what the worshipper of the dinar and wealth cannot see.

And my only madness is that I am human,

    walking amid filth and mire.

I see winged specters with my own eyes

in the night—wings that look like tails.

I gaze toward them, but find no trace of them,

so I feel at peace with my night and my fears.

Until, when my imaginings soared through the air

and embraced my eternities past in the worlds of eternities to come,

I saw my night's specters had taken on the forms

of demons, in thousands of shapes.

They slip, dancing, through the forest clearings,

to eerie humming, cawing, and neighing,

and fill the air with wailing and growls,

    like a roar in a lion's maw.

And at times they emerge in the form of ringing,

and at times they emerge in the color of dry clay.

And at times they vanish from my sight, so I see

in them phantoms of my sufferings and my hopes.

So I turn, neither timid nor afraid,

I cry out among my visions and my ghouls:

Oh, my joy, as night's darkness hides me

from humankind, so I live amid thickets!

    على مثالك اشكالي واحوالي

    Specters of my night, come! I am a specter;

my forms and states are patterned after you.

I live like you, a phantom among imaginings

of air, and of water and sweet-flowing water,

and of brooding and terrifying groans,

and of tears, sighs, and wailing,

and of rising above the world, and of haughtiness,

and of yearning to shatter shackles.

As though I, while night's blackness engulfs me,

were a vast sea dozing in the lap of trickling waters,

or a fragment of flame between robes

    of ash, resembling rags.

Specters of my night, enough! My soul is tormented,

and my words and deeds have become clear.

Specters of my night, I see myself plainly,

as I see you enduring the worst of terrors.

Specters of my night, why are you silent?

Do you mock my sufferings and my words?

Specters of my night, my intimate communion and my affection

have both been enamored of your radiance for generations.

Specters of my night, this verse is for you, from a specter

who gazes at you with esteem and reverence.
