Arab youth, blessed be you in your youth,

defying oppression, wrathful in the great ordeal.

And blessed be you, stronger than lions

of heart in battle, and sharper of fang.

And blessed be Syria's soil, the earth

that enfolded you, O her fallen youth.

For you are immortal, even though you met

    your deaths and faced hardships.

Arab youth of Syria, a greeting

I echo as a welcome salutation,

and send with the breezes as fragrance,

and as radiance and a dissolved elixir.

I ask, with wounds within my heart

that, when I tend them, gleam like spears:

Is there no day that passes without turmoil,

or a tyrant's cruelty breeding turmoil,

or victims unjustly driven to death,

or an enemy who never shoots but hits?

Oh, would that we were dust,

if the sword does not cast off its sheath.

And our country's enemy has never repented,

yet had he heard the sword's clang, he would have repented.

We asked him for peace, but he did not answer us,

and understood neither the question nor the answer.

Arab youth, among the slain and wounded,

and those who cross the wide expanses in chains,

upon your torn remains we build lofty edifices,

and from your heads we raise the domes.

And within your cries are lightning and thunder,

and the rainclouds' water pours in torrents.

You stirred sorrows within our hearts,

    and awakened our sweet hopes.

We glorify in you the spirit of rising

above this world, and steadfast hearts.

And what is this world? A mirage in a wasteland,

gleaming with light, so you find it lovely as bubbling water.

Ah, may this world not exist if we do not

live in it with honor and dignity.

Nor would we be noble if we shrank

from the great ordeal, nor would we be young men.

The life of the Arabs after you is dust,

if they do not tread the right path.

Are you not noble brothers of ours?

In you we have lost a claw and a fang.

Are you not the finest riders of mounts,

on the morning of departure, and of purebred Arabian steeds?

And who, apart from you, goes forth to meet death

    and scorns calamities and hardships?

A yearning draws him toward the great ordeal,

and on its mounts he crosses the uplands.

And pain and hatred bind us to you

against a people who made us taste torment.

    فلما مزقت ظهروا ذئابا

    For a while they appeared in the cloak of lambs;

then, when it was torn, they emerged as wolves.

Slaves to their lives, companions in evil,

selfish men who fear no reproach,

slaves to money, seeking nothing but

    sleep, food, or drink.

And what good is bulk in bodies

if their souls lie in ruins?

Our fallen, we escort you to burial and march on

in your footsteps as wrathful lions.

And we remember the blood you shed,

which ran red and stained the ravines.

And we remember the lives you lost,

pure in origin, rivaling the clouds in height.

And we remember you: every one of you a brave man,

fiercely proud, now departed and gone.

And throughout his life he was a fierce lion,

then after his death became a shooting star.

And we remember you whenever a wound bleeds,

and the heart's fire blazes fiercely.

And we remember you while the age of oppression lingers,

echoing a groan of a wretched end.

And whoever wrongs an innocent dies of grief,

and his home turns to poverty and desolation.

    Our fallen, a welcome salutation,

I echo it as an answered prayer.
