And a night I spent in sorrow,

And in weeping over the dwelling and the home,

And in recalling abandonment—woe is me!

How hard abandonment is upon the afflicted!

    And in sorrows long recurring,

And in cares that weighed down my breast,

And in hopes whose fruit had withered,

    When the temple's priestess approached,

An enchantress gazing toward her lord.

    Welcome to the approaching enchanter!

I confided in her at night, yearning for

Her words, my heart like a cauldron.

    وصانها بالروح والانمل

    Her melodies—inspiration had fashioned them,

    And preserved them with soul and fingertips;

Then, like magic, came the echo of its revelation,

    Enchanting the burdened poet's mind.

And her soft voice—O her voice, so

Soft, O wish of the hopeful!

I would ransom you with the soul steeped in

Your sweet tones within the temple.

With them you while away a night upon a stage

Whose pillars rise above the sky.

    ما اشبه المنزل بالمنزل

    Each, in my creed, is an abode;

How much one abode resembles the other!

The temple's sanctity at the exit,

The theater's sanctity at the entrance.

And her dazzling beauty—O her beauty, so

    Dazzling, O sweet-tasting spring!

I drank in purity; the soul resisted

What it abhorred, and did not stoop.

And beauty, like a rose, when guarded

On every side, grows and does not wither.

And if a hand should touch it with harm,

Its petals scatter from on high.

O priest of faith, you reminded me of

Layla and the days of first love.

You reminded me of her in the talk of night,

And in dawn's passion, in seclusion,

And in morning's weeping, for fear of rejection,

And in the smile of my pitch-dark night,

And in the voice's hush upon meeting,

And in the rustling of the robe and feet.

    من مشكل امضي إلى مشكل

    Such is my life, all of it a puzzle;

From one puzzle I go on to another.
