    والدمع مسفوح ومنهمر

    Alas, Faisal! The heart is broken,

    and tears are shed and streaming.

  2. اللَه في آياته عجب

    والدهر في طياته عبر

    God! There is wonder in His signs,

    and time holds lessons in its folds.

    ما الدهر ما المقدور ما القدر

    God! What are the world and its allure?

    What is time, what is ordained, what is fate?

    كالدهر لا طول ولا قصر

    like time itself: neither long nor short.

    and star after star, and the moon.

    تحتاطها الاشباح والصور

    God! Thoughts wander aimlessly;

    phantoms and images surround them.

    انا ورب البيت نعتذر

    O mighty Faisal, forgive us;

    indeed, by the Lord of the House, we apologize.

    our hearing and sight would ransom you.

  15. نفديك بالارواح لا كذب

    في القول لا واللَه او زور

    We would ransom you with our lives—there is no lie

    in our words—no, by God—nor falsehood.
