Ah, my soul, how long must I suffer?

And how long will torment hold sway over me?

Whenever I sought escape from my torment,

It marched straight toward me and advanced.

You, O soul, are the source of my misery.

You are all affliction; in you it has taken form.

You are an illusion in our body; and it is strange

that we see illusion suffer like reality.

As for me, my heart is a slave to feeling, and this

is a slave to my soul, and we all suffer.

My soul, why am I denied what I hope for?

My soul, why does life seem like a night

that grows darker if light appears within its gloom?

the soul recoils, and conscience falls silent.

the heap of despair crumbles after a while.

for the impossible and despairing, complaining of injustice.

then at another I see life smiling.

Bewildered in soul, in a bewilderment—I do not know

what its cure is; and, by God, I do not know.

You, O soul, are the source of my misery.

Ah, my soul, how long must I suffer?
