أَمّاas for الفِراقُparting فَإِنَّهُthen indeed it is ماwhat أَعهَدُI know well
هُوَit تَوأَميmy twin لَوif أَنَّthat بَيناًseparation يولَدُis born
As for parting, it is what I know well;
Parting is nothing new to me
As for separation, it is the constant I have always known,
it is my twin, if separation could be born.
We were born twins, though earth delivered me first
Indeed, it is my twin, were such a parting ever born.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَلِمناwe knew أَنَّناthat we سَنُطيعُهُwe will obey it
لَمّاwhen عَلِمناwe learned أَنَّناthat we لاnot نَخلِدُwe live forever
And we knew full well that we would yield to it
We know we must obey his will
And we have known that we must surely yield to its decree,
when we learned that we would not live forever.
Since we know we were not created to last
From the moment we learned that we are not immortal.
وَإِذاand if الجِيادُthe fine steeds أَباO Abu البَهِيِّal-Bahiyy نَقَلنَناthey carry us
عَنكُمaway from you فَأَردَأُthen the worst ماwhat رَكِبتُI have ridden الأَجوَدُthe finest
And if the fine steeds, O Abu al-Bahiyy, carry us
When the noble steeds carry us off
And when the steeds, O Abu al-Bahi, bear us away
away from you, then the finest is the worst I have ridden.
Away from you, how grudging must my departure be!
From your side, then the finest mount becomes the vilest ride.
مَنwhoever خَصَّsingles out بِالذَمِّfor blame الفِراقَparting فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
مَنone who لاnot يَرىsees فيin الدَهرِthe world شَيئاًanything يُحمَدُis praised
If anyone singles out parting for blame, I
He who blames parting: I am not
While some single out separation alone for their blame, I am he
am one who sees nothing in this world worthy of praise.
One who sees nothing in life worthy of praise
Who sees nothing in the turning of Time worthy of praise.
