ياO أَيُّهاyou المَلِكُthe king الَّذيwhose نُدَماؤُهُhis boon companions

O king, whose boon companions
O King, whose boon companions truly stand
are his partners in his wealth, not his sovereignty:
Partners in his fortune, though not his throne,
فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday بَينَناbetween us دَمُblood كَرمَةٍa grapevine
لَكَfor you تَوبَةٌrepentance مِنof تَوبَةٍrepentance مِنof سَفكِهِshedding it
each day, between us is the blood of a vine;
Each day between us flows the vine's red blood,
you repent of repenting of shedding it.
And you repent the very penance of its shedding.

أَمِنَis it of الشَرابِwine تَتوبُyou repent أَمor مِنof تَركِهِgiving it up
And truthfulness is among the traits of the noble—so tell us:
Since truth defines the noble character, inform us:
do you repent of drinking wine, or of giving it up?
Do you repent the wine, or the forsaking of it?
