شَوقيmy longing إِلَيكَfor you نَفىbanished لَذيذَthe sweetness of هُجوعيmy sleep
فارَقتَنيyou left me فَأَقامَand it settled بَينَbetween ضُلوعيmy ribs
My longing for you banished the sweetness of my sleep;
My longing for you has banished the sweetness of slumber,
You left me, and it settled between my ribs.
You departed, yet that longing remained dwelling within my ribs.
أَوَand did ...? ماnot وَجَدتُمyou (plural) found فيin الصَراةِthe Sarat مُلوحَةًsaltiness
مِمّاfrom what أُرَقرِقُI let flow فيinto الفُراتِthe Euphrates دُموعيmy tears
And did you not find saltiness in the Sarat,
Did you not taste a saltiness in the waters of the Sarat,
From my tears that I let flow into the Euphrates?
From the flood of tears I shed into the Euphrates?
ماnot زِلتُI ceased أَحذَرُI guard مِنagainst وَداعِكَparting from you جاهِداًstriving hard
حَتّىuntil اِغتَدىbecame أَسَفيmy sorrow عَلىfor التَوديعِthe farewell
I kept striving to guard against parting from you,
I strove endlessly to guard against your farewell,
Until I came to grieve for the farewell itself.
Until my sorrow became the very act of parting.
رَحَلَdeparted العَزاءُsolace بِرِحلَتيwith my departure فَكَأَنَّماso it was as though
أَتبَعتُهُI sent after it الأَنفاسَthe breaths لِلتَشيّعِto accompany
Solace departed with my departure, so it was as though
Solace departed upon my departure, as though
I sent my breaths after it as an escort.
I sent my sighs to escort it away in procession.
