لُيَيلَتُناour little night المَنوطَةُbound بِالتَنادِto the Day of Calling
Is it one night, or six nights in one—
Alone or in a group of six in solitude
Is this a single night, or six in one? Our night, suspended till the Day of Calling.
our little night, bound to the Day of Calling?
Our night tied with yearning
As though the Stars of the Great Bear, within its gloom, are unveiled maidens clad in mourning garb.
كَأَنَّas though بَناتِthe Daughters of نَعشٍNaʿsh (the Bier) فيin دُجاهاits darkness
خَرائِدُvirgin maidens سافِراتٌunveiled فيin حِدادِmourning
As though the Daughters of Naʿsh, in its darkness,
As if shrouded daughters in their darkness
I contemplate the quaffing of death's cup, leading the horses, heads held high.
were unveiled maidens in mourning.
Travelers' tents in mourning
My resolve is surety to the Khattian spears, promising spilled blood of city and desert alike.
أُفَكِّرُI ponder فيabout مُعاقَرَةِgrappling with المَناياdeaths
وَقودِand leading الخَيلِthe horses مُشرِفَةَraised الهَواديnecks
I ponder grappling with death,
I think of confronting fate
How long this lagging behind and sloth? How long this persistence in mere persisting?
and leading horses with their necks held high.
With cavalry whose advance the valleys fuel
Distracting the soul from the pursuit of glory by vending verse in a stagnant market.
زَعيمٌa guarantor لِلقَناto the spears الخَطِّيِّof al-Khatt عَزميmy resolve
بِسَفكِto shed دَمِthe blood of الحَواضِرِtownsfolk وَالبَواديand desert dwellers
My resolve pledges to the spears of al-Khatt
My will set on the narrow path
The youth that has passed cannot be reclaimed, nor can a single fleeing day be brought back.
to shed the blood of townsfolk and desert dwellers.
By shedding the blood of cities and wilds
When my eye glimpses the white of hoary age, it finds that whiteness lodged within its own black pupil.
إِلىuntil كَمhow long ذاthis التَخَلُّفُhanging back وَالتَوانيand slackness
وَكَمand how long هَذاthis التَماديpersistence فيin التَماديpersistence
How long this hanging back and slackness,
How long this lagging and procrastination
Whenever I grow after reaching perfection's peak, my very decline has begun within that growth.
and how long this persisting in persistence,
And how long this persistence in persistence
Can I be content to live and not repay the Prince for the bounties his hands have bestowed?
وَشُغلُand distracting النَفسِthe soul عَنfrom طَلَبِseeking المَعاليhigh honors
بِبَيعِby selling الشِعرِpoetry فيin سوقِthe market of الكَسادِstagnation
and distracting the soul from seeking high honors
And the soul's preoccupation from seeking glory
May God reward the journey to him with good, though it left the camels limp as empty waterskins.
by selling poetry in a stagnant market?
By selling poetry in a stagnant market
My she-camel did not reach Ibn Ibrahim until she held not a day's meal for a tick.
وَماand not ماضيthe bygone days of الشَبابِyouth بِمُستَرَدٍّrecoverable
وَلاand no يَومٌday يَمُرُّpasses بِمُستَعادِrecoverable
And youth gone by cannot be reclaimed,
Neither my past youth can be regained
Was there not a vast land between us? Yet he made its length seem but the width of a sword-belt.
nor can a day that passes be recovered.
Nor a day that's passed retrieved
He pushed our distance to the distance of nearness, and drew our nearness to the nearness of distance.
مَتىwhenever لَحَظَتnotices بَياضَthe whiteness of الشَيبِgray hair عَينيmy eye
فَقَدthen indeed وَجَدَتهُit found it مِنهاof it (the eye) فيin السَوادِthe dark pupil
Whenever my eye notices the whiteness of gray hair,
When my eyes glimpsed the whiteness of old age
And when I came to him, he raised my station high, and seated me atop the seven strong heavens.
it has already found it in its own dark pupil.
It found it among the blackness
He beamed with joy before I could offer greeting, and cast down his wealth before the guest-cushion.
مَتىwhenever ماever (emphatic) اِزدَدتُI increase مِنfrom بَعدِafter التَناهيfull maturity
فَقَدthen indeed وَقَعَoccurs اِنتِقاصيmy decrease فيin اِزدِياديmy increase
Whenever I increase beyond my prime,
When after transcendence I increased
We blame you, O Ali, for no sin committed, save that you have shamed all other men by comparison.
my decline occurs within my increase.
My decrease occurred in my increase
And that you bestow not merely upon the generous; your gift is that he may even be named 'Generous.'
أَأَرضىshall I be content? أَنthat أَعيشَI live وَلاand not أُكافيI repay
عَلىfor ماwhat لِلأَميرِbelongs to the emir مِنَof الأَياديfavors
Would I be content to live and not repay
Shall I be content to live without repaying
It is as if your generosity were the Faith itself, fearing the doom of apostasy should you ever change.
the favors bestowed by the emir?
The prince for his great favors
As if the skulls in battle were eyes, and your swords were forged from slumber seeking them.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod المَسيرَthe journey إِلَيهِto him خَيراًwith good
وَإِنand although تَرَكَit left المَطاياthe mounts كَالمَزادِlike waterskins
May God reward the journey to him with good,
May God reward well the journey toward him
You have fashioned your spearheads out of sorrows, so they never stir but within a human heart.
though it left the mounts like waterskins.
Though he left horses like the stalls
And on the day you brought the horses, forelocks wild, their tails knotted tight for the charge.
فَلَمso did not تَلقَmeet اِبنَthe son of إِبراهيمَIbrahim عَنسيmy sturdy she-camel
وَفيهاand in her قوتُsustenance for يَومٍone day لِلقُرادِfor ticks
For my sturdy she-camel did not meet Ibn Ibrahim
So Ibn Ibrahim did not meet me
With them, destruction hovered over a people who held, in Latakia, the tyranny of 'Aad.
with a day's sustenance for ticks still in her.
With a day's ration for locusts
So the West became a sea of waters, and the East became a sea of steeds.
أَلَمdid not ...? يَكُbe بَينَناbetween us بَلَدٌa land بَعيدٌdistant
فَصَيَّرَso he made طولَهُits length عَرضَthe width of النِجادِthe sword-belt
Was there not a distant land between us?
Was there not a distant land between us
The banners fluttered for you there, and the land surged in waves of sharp white steel.
Yet he made its length the width of a sword-belt.
That made its length the width of proximity
They met you with the stubborn hearts of wild camels, but you drove them on, the sword's edge their driver.
وَأَبعَدَand he banished بُعدَناour distance بُعدَthe distance of التَدانيdrawing near
وَقَرَّبَand he brought near قُربَناour nearness قُربَthe nearness of البِعادِseparation
He drove our distance away, as nearness does,
And made our nearness like remoteness
You tore from them the garment of error, and clothed them in the raiment of righteousness.
and drew our nearness close, as distance does.
And our closeness like distance
They did not surrender power by their own choice, nor did they feign love for you out of true affection.
فَلَمّاand when جِئتُهُI came to him أَعلىhe raised مَحَلّيmy station
وَأَجلَسَنيand seated me عَلىupon السَبعِthe seven heavens الشِدادِmighty
And when I came to him, he raised my station,
Yet when I came to him at my utmost
They did not abase themselves for lack of ambition, nor did they submit for the joy of submission.
and seated me upon the seven mighty heavens.
He seated me atop the fierce lions
But the fear of you blew through their vitals, as the wind blows through a swarm of locusts.
تَهَلَّلَhe beamed قَبلَbefore تَسليميmy greeting عَلَيهِto him
وَأَلقىand offered مالَهُhis wealth قَبلَbefore الوِسادِthe cushion
He beamed before I greeted him,
He gleamed before I greeted him
They died before their death; and when you granted pardon, you resurrected them before the Day of Return.
and offered his wealth before offering a cushion.
Casting his wealth before the pillows
You sheathed sharp blades that, had they not repented, would have wiped them out like erasing ink.
نَلومُكَwe blame you ياO عَلِيُّAli لِغَيرِfor no ذَنبٍfault
لِأَنَّكَbecause you قَدindeed زَرَيتَcast reproach عَلىupon العِبادِmankind
We blame you, Ali, for no fault,
We blame you, O Ali, though guiltless
Sudden anger, no matter how strong, cannot triumph over ancient nobility.
because you have put mankind to shame;
Because you were kind to people
Let not the tongues of apparent allies deceive you, for they are turned by the hearts of enemies.
وَأَنَّكَand because you لاnot تَجودُbestow generously عَلىupon جَوادٍa generous man
هِباتُكَyour gifts أَنthat يُلَقَّبَhe be called بِالجَوادِas generous
and because no generous man is allowed,
And you do not bestow on a steed
Be like Death: pitying no one who weeps at its hand, quenching its thirst though it remains ever parched.
by your gifts, to be called generous.
Your gifts for it to be called generous
For a wound will break open again after a time, if the healing is built upon corruption.
كَأَنَّas though سَخاءَكَyour generosity الإِسلامُIslam تَخشىyou fear
إِذاif ماever (emphatic) حُلتَyou change عاقِبَةَthe consequence of اِرتِدادِapostasy
As though your generosity were Islam, you fear,
As if Islam fears your munificence
For water may flow from solid rock, and fire may spring from the striking flint.
if you change, the consequence of apostasy.
Lest it end in apostasy
How can a coward sleep soundly at night, when you have spread thorns beneath his side?
كَأَنَّas though الهامَheads فيin الهَيجاbattle عُيونٌeyes
وَقَدand already طُبِعَتwere forged سُيوفُكَyour swords مِنfrom رُقادِsleep
As though heads in battle were eyes,
As if the shields in coats of mail are eyes
In sleep he sees your spear pierce his kidneys, and dreads to see it when he wakes.
and your swords had been forged from sleep.
With your swords molded from sheaths
You advised me, O Abu al-Husayn, to praise a people; I dwelt with them, yet departed without provision.
وَقَدand indeed صُغتَyou fashioned الأَسِنَّةَthe spearheads مِنfrom هُمومٍworries
فَماso not يَخطُرنَthey cross إِلّاexcept فيin فُؤادِa heart
And you have fashioned spearheads from worries,
You have attuned tongues from anxieties
They thought I had praised them in days of old, but you were my true intent in all that I praised.
so they pass nowhere but through a heart.
So naught occurs to them but hearts
Though I shall depart from you the day after tomorrow, my heart shall not depart from your court.
وَيَومَand the day جَلَبتَهاyou brought them شُعثَdisheveled النَواصيforelocks

And on the day you brought them, their forelocks disheveled,
The day you summoned them, forelocks disheveled
I am your lover wherever my camels may turn, and your guest wherever in the lands I may be.
their tail-locks knotted for combat,
Tied in plaits for pursuit
وَحامَand hovered بِهاwith them الهَلاكُdestruction عَلىover أُناسِa people
لَهُمthey had بِاللاذِقِيَّةِin Latakia بَغيُthe tyranny of عادِʿAd
and destruction wheeled with them over a people
And ruin befell a people
whose tyranny in Latakia was that of ʿAd,
Who in Al Ladhiqiyah tyrannized
فَكانَso was الغَربُthe west بَحراًa sea مِنof مِياهٍwater

the west became a sea of water,
So the West was a sea of waters
and the east became a sea of steeds.
And the East a sea of steeds
وَقَدand already خَفَقَتfluttered لَكَfor you الراياتُthe banners فيهِin it

Your banners had fluttered there,
Over which your banners fluttered
so it kept surging with bright, sharp swords.
Tossing in white mourning
لَقوكَthey met you بِأَكبُدِwith the livers of الإِبلِthe camels الأَباياrefusing water through illness

They met you with the livers of ailing, water-refusing camels,
They met you with camel livers, the white-eyed,
so you drove them, the sword's edge their drover.
So you quenched them, the sword's edge sharp
وَقَدand already مَزَّقتَyou tore ثَوبَthe robe of الغَيِّerror عَنهُمfrom them

And you had torn the robe of error from them,
You tore the garb of error off them
and I had clothed them in the robe of right guidance.
And clothed them in guidance

They did not relinquish rule by choice,
Thus they did not leave authority by choice
nor profess love for you out of love;
Or feign your affection out of affection
وَلاnor اِستَفَلواthey lowered themselves لِزُهدٍfrom disinterest فيin التَعاليexaltation

وَلاnor اِنقادواthey submitted سُروراًout of delight بِاِنقِيادِin submission
nor did they lower themselves from disdain for high rank,
Nor fall in ascetic disdain of glory
nor submit from delight in submission.
Or yield happily in yielding
وَلَكِنbut هَبَّswept خَوفُكَfear of you فيthrough حَشاهُمtheir entrails

But fear of you swept through their entrails,
Rather, your fear blew through their insides
as wind sweeps through a swarm of locusts.
Like the wind in a locust's leg
وَماتواand they died قَبلَbefore مَوتِهِمُtheir death فَلَمّاthen when

They died before their death; and when
And they died before their deaths, so when
you showed mercy, you restored them before the Resurrection.
You pardoned, you revived them before the Return
غَمَدتَyou sheathed صَوارِماًkeen swords لَوif لَمnot يَتوبواthey had repented

You sheathed keen swords; had they not repented,
You sheathed blades which, had they not repented,
you would have erased them with those blades, as ink is erased.
Would have erased them like erasure
وَماand not الغَضَبُanger الطَريفُnewly arisen وَإِنand even if تَقَوّىit grows strong

And newly roused anger, though it grow strong,
For passing fury, though intense,
cannot prevail over long-inherited generosity.
Is not half your enduring nobility

So let no loyal tongues deceive you,
Let not tongues of partisans deceive you
turned by hostile hearts.
Their hearts foes though they be friends

And be like death, which feels no pity for a weeper
Be like death, heeding no mourner
who weeps because of it; it gives drink, yet remains thirsty.
Who weeps from it, though it is unfeeling

For a wound reopens after a time
For the wound surely heals after a time
if the structure is founded on decay.
If the building's based on ruin

And water flows from lifeless matter,
And water flows even from solidity
and fire comes forth from firesticks.
And fire comes even from flint

And how can a coward spend the night lying down
How can a coward sleep at ease
when you have spread qatad thorns beneath his side?
When you line his side with prickly chaff
يَرىhe sees فيin النَومِsleep رُمحَكَyour spear فيin كُلاهُhis kidneys

In sleep he sees your spear in his kidneys,
Seeing your spear in both his dreams
and fears to see it while awake.
Fearing he'll see it while awake
أَشَرتَyou counseled أَباAbu (father of) الحُسَينِal-Husayn بِمَدحِto praise قَومٍa people

You counseled me, Abu al-Husayn, to praise a people
You ordered Abu al-Husayn with praise of folk
among whom I lodged, then departed without provisions.
Amongst whom I arrived without provision

They thought I had praised them long ago,
And they thought I'd praised them long ago
but you were the one I meant in praising them.
While you were my purpose in praising them

I shall leave you the day after tomorrow
but my heart will not leave your courtyard.
My heart leaves not your courtyard

Loving you wherever my mount takes me
and am your guest in whatever land I may be.
Your guest wherever in the lands I was
