تَطاولhas grown long هذاthis الليلُthe night ماnot كادnearly ينجليpass away
كليلِlike a night of تمامٍfull length ماnot يريدwants صَراماan end
This night has dragged on, scarcely coming to an end,
This night lingered on, it barely shone its light,
Like the longest night, unwilling to end.
Like a complete night unwilling to grow bright,
سأبكيI shall weep for أخيmy brother ماas long as دامَcontinues صوتthe voice of حمامةٍa dove
تؤرقُkeeps awake فيin واديthe valley of البطاحِal-Butah حماماdoves
I shall weep for my brother as long as a dove's voice
I'll cry for my brother, while the dove's voice rings,
Keeps doves awake in the valley of al-Butah.
Disturbing the valley's doves at first light,
وابعثُand I raise أنواحاًlaments عليهfor him بسحرةٍbefore dawn
وتذرفand shed عينانيmy two eyes الدموعthe tears سجاماin streams
And I shall raise laments for him before dawn,
And send him laments with a spell-binding tune,
And my two eyes shed tears in streams.
My eyes shedding tears poured out in a stream,
وأجرأand braver منthan ليثِa lion بخفّانat Khaffan مخدرٍin its lair
وافضلُand superior انif عيَّare tongue-tied الرجالthe men كلاماin speech
And braver than a lion in its lair at Khaffan,
Braver than a lion with numbed toes in its lair,
And more eloquent when men are at a loss for words.
I prefer if men of dignity speak their dream
