Had I wished, by God who sent down guidance,

I would have sworn, and by the draped, droop-lipped white camels:

though Malik has left his place vacant for me,

how fine a man he was in hardship and times of drought!

Fierce toward enemies, yet easy of approach

to whoever seeks his bounty, free of guile.

Noble in repute, sweet in disposition, illustrious [reading uncertain],

patient in hardship, his dwelling shared with others.

    Forbearing when noble men quarreled,

their knee-bands came undone, and folly made them reckless.

And you were sweeter to my soul

than water mixed with the pure white honey of bees.

And even when darkness was a veil for some of them,

his face appeared, without rudeness or stinginess.

A trustworthy man, whose fire no blame assails

when it is kindled among the riding camels and baggage.

A ransom for your evening resting place: my mother's son and my maternal aunt,

and my mother, and all above the two straps of a sandal,

and my weapons, my garments, and my saddle, for his remembrance,

and my wealth—if any offering could avail as ransom for you.

And every man among men, after his mother's son is gone,

is like one who has lost a hand through injury.

And some men are like a palm tree bearing no fruit,

and no shade—merely counted among the palms.
