إلىto مسجدa mosque طوراat times وand طوراat times إلىto حانِa tavern
إلى مسجد طورا و طورا إلى حانِ
يكونhe is ملاكاan angel تارةat one time وand كشيطانِlike a devil
يكون ملاكا تارة و كشيطانِ
To a mosque at times, and at times to a tavern.
At times he is an angel, and at times like a devil.
وand يحسنhe gives generously للمعدومto the destitute منfrom فضلthe surplus مالهof his wealth
و يحسن للمعدوم من فضل ماله
وand يجنيhe commits ذنوباsins لاnot يرىhe sees أنهthat he جانِis an offender
و يجني ذنوبا لا يرى أنه جانِ
And he gives generously to the destitute from his wealth,
yet commits sins without seeing himself as the offender.

كلevery فتوىfatwa امتطتْrode لسانthe tongue جهولof an ignorant person
كل فتوى امتطتْ لسان جهول

Every fatwa that rode the tongue of an ignorant person
أزهقتtook أرواحاlives وand أخْلتemptied دياراhomes
أزهقت أرواحا و أخْلت ديارا
كمhow many بلادlands كانتwere تعيشliving بأمنٍin peace
كم بلاد كانت تعيش بأمنٍ
took lives and emptied homes.
How many lands once lived in peace
فأتتهاso there came to them فتوىa fatwa تسوقbringing الدماراdestruction
فأتتها فتوى تسوق الدمارا

until a fatwa came to them, bringing destruction.

وand للمرءa person has نفسانtwo souls، واحدةone
و للمرء نفسان، واحدة
تريدwants الرقيadvancement لهfor him وand النجاحاsuccess
تريد الرقي له و النجاحا
And a person has two souls: one
wants him to rise and succeed;
وand أخرىanother إلىto الأرضthe earth شُدّتْwas bound وand لمnot
و أخرى إلى الأرض شُدّتْ و لم
تزلceased توسعlavishing upon الأختthe sister منهاfrom her نباحاbarking
تزل توسع الأخت منها نباحا
the other is bound to the earth and has never
ceased barking at her sister.
