عظمتْbecame grave سيئةa misdeed مطمورةْburied
عظمتْ سيئة مطمورةْ
And as for the ignorant man, however
grave his misdeed may become, it lies buried.

يغلب المالُ الحقَّ في أرض قوم

Money overpowers right in a people's land
منfrom حشاهاits depths تبخَّرevaporated الإنسانُthe human being
من حشاها تبخَّر الإنسانُ
ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge لاnot تستقيمruns straight طريقa path
ليت شعري لا تستقيم طريق
from whose depths the human being has evaporated.
I wonder—no path runs straight
فيamong ذويهاits people للحقfor what is right عزّis scarce مكانُa place
في ذويها للحق عزّ مكانُ

للعدلfor justice سيفa sword لمhas not يزلceased to be فيin كفهits palm،
للعدل سيف لم يزل في كفه،
فيon حدهits edge حتفdoom المظالمinjustices يسطعُshines
في حده حتف المظالم يسطعُ
Justice has a sword, ever in its hand;
upon its edge, the doom of injustices shines.
إنif تنجُthey escape منهfrom it اليومtoday يضربهاit strikes them غداtomorrow
إن تنجُ منه اليوم يضربها غدا
إنindeed المظالمinjustices لاno محالةَescape تُصرَعُare struck down
إن المظالم لا محالةَ تُصرَعُ
If they escape it today, it will strike them tomorrow;
indeed, injustices are inevitably struck down.

اِلتمسنا للدهر في الناس عذرا

We sought among people an excuse for Time
حينwhen آلىit swore ألاnot to يواليbefriend كريماa noble man
حين آلى ألا يوالي كريما
إنindeed نفسthe soul الكريمof the noble man تزفرbreathes out ناراfire
إن نفس الكريم تزفر نارا
when it swore not to befriend a noble man.
Indeed, the noble man's soul breathes out fire
إذwhen ترىit sees دهرهاits time يحابيfavors اللئيماthe base man
إذ ترى دهرها يحابي اللئيما
when it sees its time favoring the base man.
