الناس تسقط قتلى في مدينته

الناس تسقط قتلى في مدينته

و كلُّ همِّ أبي الوأواءِ في هرِّ

و كلُّ همِّ أبي الوأواءِ في هرِّ

The people fall slain in his city,

And Abu al-Waʾwāʾ’s sole concern is a cat.

ما ضر إن سلِمَ الهرُّ الحبيب له

ما ضر إن سلِمَ الهرُّ الحبيب له

ومات من مات في بر و في بحر

ومات من مات في بر و في بحر

What harm is there if his beloved cat is safe,

And those who died have died, on land and at sea?

كال للسلطة نقدا من ذهبْ

كال للسلطة نقدا من ذهبْ

***

He meted out golden criticism to the authorities,

و مساء وجدوه قد ذهبْ

و مساء وجدوه قد ذهبْ

ربما ما كان يدري أنما

ربما ما كان يدري أنما

And that evening they found him already gone.

Perhaps he did not know that

نقده ذاك له فيه التعب

نقده ذاك له فيه التعب

That criticism of his held nothing but trouble for him.

أعجبُ من وطن مغصوب

أعجبُ من وطن مغصوب

حريته تشتعل دما

حريته تشتعل دما

I marvel at a homeland seized by force:

Its freedom blazes with blood.

كم يتمنى أن يستيقظ

كم يتمنى أن يستيقظ

يوما و يرى الغاصبَ عدَما

يوما و يرى الغاصبَ عدَما

How it longs to awaken

One day, and see the usurper reduced to nothing.
