  1. أعلن حزب المشمش

    أن الديموقراطية غائبة

    The Apricot Party announced

    That democracy is absent

  2. مادامت لا تسقيه الدولة

    من صنبور خزينتها العامة.

    So long as the state does not water it

    From the tap of its public treasury.

    ولي يدٌ قد تربّت لا تمسُّ سوى

    ....

    And I have a hand, brought up to touch nothing but

  4. ما جاء من عرق من جبهتي انسكبا

    و لو إلى مال غيري ساقها طمع

    What came from sweat that poured from my brow.

    And if greed drove it toward another's wealth,

  5. لمَا سمحْتُ لها لي تنتمي نسَبا

    ....

    I would not allow it to claim kinship with me.

    ....

  6. يتكلف الإحسانَ طالبُ سمعةٍ

    و لدى الكريم طبيعة و سجيةْ

    One seeking a reputation makes a show of benevolence,

    While in the generous it is nature and innate disposition.

  7. فيدُ المرائي ليس فيها من ندى

    و يد الكريم على الدوام نديةْْ

    For the hypocrite's hand has not a drop of dew,

    And the generous one's hand is always dewy.

    لست أبالي بالشامت أو

    ....

    I care nothing for the one who gloats, or

  9. بالحاسد ليلي و نهاري

    حال الشامت ليس تدوم

    For the envious one, through my nights and days.

    The gloating one's state does not last,

  10. و الحاسد مأدبة النار

    And the envious one is a feast for the fire.
