إن تشْكُ كن في المشتكى كيِّسا
ماnot كلُّevery مصغٍlistener صدرُهhis breast رحبُspacious
ما كلُّ مصغٍ صدرُه رحبُ
If you complain, be discerning in your complaint.
Not every listener has an open heart.
ربَّmany a أخbrother تشكوyou complain لهto him وwhile هْوhe منfrom
ربَّ أخ تشكو له و هْو من
همومهhis worries ذابmelted لهfor him القلبُthe heart
همومه ذاب له القلبُ
You complain to many a brother, while from
His own worries his heart has melted away.

العمْرlife ُ يبدوseems لحظةa moment تبرقُflashes
العمْر ُ يبدو لحظة تبرقُ
....
Life seems a moment that flashes,
وand الدهرtime يوماًa day مَاsome لهاfor it يسرقُsteals
و الدهر يوماً مَا لها يسرقُ
منwhoever رازَexamined صرْفَvicissitudes الدهرof time مستكشفاseeking to discover
من رازَ صرْفَ الدهر مستكشفا
And time will one day steal it away.
Whoever probes time's vicissitudes, seeking insight,
صارcame to يرىsee الموتَdeath بناaround us يحدقُcloses in
صار يرى الموتَ بنا يحدقُ

Comes to see death closing in on us.

إذاwhen ماemphatic particle غرابthe crow البينof parting نادىcalled out لفرقةfor separation
إذا ما غراب البين نادى لفرقة
رأيتI saw فؤاديmy heart فرّfled منيَfrom me هارباfleeing
رأيت فؤادي فرّ منيَ هاربا
When the crow of parting calls for separation,
I see my heart flee from me, running away.
وand كيفhow سيبقىwill it remain وwhile هْوَit يعلمknows أننيthat I
و كيف سيبقى و هْوَ يعلم أنني
أصيرI become غداةon the morning of البينparting بالبينbecause of parting ذائباmelting
أصير غداة البين بالبين ذائبا
And how can it stay, when it knows that I
Will melt from parting on the morning of parting?
فيامنso, O you who بكىwept نأْيَthe distance of الحبيبِthe beloved وand لُمْتُهI reproached him
فيامن بكى نأْيَ الحبيبِ و لُمْتُه
لقدindeed صرتُI have become عماof what قلتْهI said it لكto you تائباrepentant
لقد صرتُ عما قلتْه لك تائبا
So, O you who wept at the beloved's distance, whom I reproached,
I have indeed come to repent of what I said to you.
