I watch the days: each day brings forth

For us, from their affairs, a wondrous marvel.

So here is Baqil, now an orator,

And Sahban's tongue has failed in speech.

And a nightingale was gagged so it would not sing,

And the crow was granted leave in its stead.

Until a wise man died of anguish,

While the scales of affairs were in disarray.

And among the things that made the firewood blaze more fiercely

Was the silence of the wise about what merits blame.

So ugliness became the rule, and now

Whenever it calls, its summons is answered.

So this is poetry, in spite of poetry itself,

Even if it belongs to prose.

And that is a poem, although to

Poetry's question it has no answer.

The logic of things has suffered among us,

So an upheaval has swept concepts away.

Ugliness rules a society and runs rampant

When estrangement befalls beauty within it.
