He has seen his world suffer from crookedness,

and reward the noble with poverty.

The scoundrel suckles at her breast while he lives

in the darkness of miserliness, though he possesses wealth.

  3. ***

    ***

His verse overflows with truth and love,

and the world is nothing but truth and love.

When both are gone, the branch of life withers,

    ***

and the earth becomes a forest without a heart.

    ***

The donkey rose to recite obscure "poetry"

and lash out at the giants of our poetry.

When he finished, the audience told him: "It is enough

for you to be an incomprehensible little scoundrel."

  8. ***

    ***

If ever the West competes with us in poetry,

we confront it with the verses of warriors.

For here is Bashshar, followed by al-Ma'arri,

and here is al-Sayyab, followed by al-Bayati.

    Others follow them; beside them,

the West is no more than amateurs.

    We have long been stars in poetry;

we gave the universe the wine of the Mu'allaqat to drink.
