لا تحاولْ منه اقترابا ففَاهُ
صارhas become يجريflows بالقدْحِwith disparagement فيin إفراطِexcess
صار يجري بالقدْحِ في إفراطِ
Do not try to draw near him, for his mouth
has begun pouring out disparagement to excess.
ذبلتْwithered أزهارُthe flowers اللباقةِof tact فيهin him
ذبلتْ أزهارُ اللباقةِ فيه
فامتطىso he mounted فيin القولspeech الحمارَthe donkey "الواطيlowly"
فامتطى في القول الحمارَ "الواطي"
The flowers of tact have withered in him,
so in speech he mounted the "lowly" donkey.
لمdid not يزلْcease يُقْذيirritating العيْنَthe eye مرْآهُthe sight of him حتىuntil
لم يزلْ يُقْذي العيْنَ مرْآهُ حتى
جعَلَتْit began تلْقاهto meet him بكلِّwith every احتياطِprecaution
جعَلَتْ تلْقاه بكلِّ احتياطِ
The sight of him kept irritating the eye, until
it began to face him with every precaution.
وand تحاشتْهshunned him الأذْنthe ear خوْفَfor fear of تأذٍّharm
و تحاشتْه الأذْن خوْفَ تأذٍّ
إذْfor لهhe has فيin الأسماعthe ears وقْعُthe impact السياطِof whips
إذْ له في الأسماع وقْعُ السياطِ
And the ear shunned him for fear of harm,
for his impact on the ears is that of whips.

الحمدpraise للهto God ليI have الأوراقُthe sheets of paper وand القلمُthe pen
الحمد لله لي الأوراقُ و القلمُ

Praise be to God: I have paper and pen.
أُلقيI cast بهwith it لهماto them both إنif نابنيbefalls me ألمُpain
أُلقي به لهما إن نابني ألمُ
هماthey both سلاحيmy weapon بدنياin a world عَمَّهاpervaded it شجعٌgreed
هما سلاحي بدنيا عَمَّها شجعٌ
If pain befalls me, I cast it upon them both.
They are my weapon in a world pervaded by greed,
فيهاin it علىagainst الشرفاءِthe honorable السُّوقَةُthe rabble التأمواbanded together
فيها على الشرفاءِ السُّوقَةُ التأموا

where the rabble have banded together against the honorable.

دفَنَhe buried القراءةَreading
دفَنَ القراءةَ
وand انثنىturned المسكينthe poor fellow يقترفperpetrates الكتابةَwriting
و انثنى المسكين يقترف الكتابةَ
He buried reading,
and the poor fellow turned to perpetrating writing.
بعدafter وقتٍa while
بعد وقتٍ
كانwas كاتبُناour writer
كان كاتبُنا
After a while,
our writer was
يعانيsuffering السكتةَa stroke الإبداعيةْcreative.
يعاني السكتةَ الإبداعيةْ.

كلevery امرئperson دالٌّindicative عليهof him ذوقُهُhis taste
كل امرئ دالٌّ عليه ذوقُهُ
بالذوقِthrough taste تنشأُarises قيمةُthe worth الإنسانِof a person
بالذوقِ تنشأُ قيمةُ الإنسانِ
Each person's taste reveals who they are.
A person's worth arises from taste.
منwhoever كانwas يأكلeating وردةًa rose تُهدىis gifted لهto him
من كان يأكل وردةً تُهدى له
ماnot عندهhe has فضلٌsuperiority علىover الحيوانِan animal
ما عنده فضلٌ على الحيوانِ
Whoever eats a rose given to him
is no better than an animal.

البحرthe sea صورةُthe image شخصٍof a person حائرٍbewildered أبداforever
البحر صورةُ شخصٍ حائرٍ أبدا

The sea is the image of a person forever bewildered,
وand الموجthe waves أفكارهhis thoughts لمdid not تأْلُslacken تضطربُchurn
و الموج أفكاره لم تأْلُ تضطربُ
كأنهas though he were تاجرٌa merchant بارتْstagnated تجارتهhis trade
كأنه تاجرٌ بارتْ تجارته
and the waves are his thoughts, never ceasing to churn.
As though he were a merchant whose trade has stagnated,
أوor شاعرٌa poet منbecause of جفاءthe coldness الحظِof fortune مُكتئِبُdejected
أو شاعرٌ من جفاء الحظِ مُكتئِبُ
or a poet dejected by fortune's coldness.
