Do you permit me, then, to withdraw

and gently tend my heart as it departs,

and draw a little nearer to myself,

a little, after being distant so long?

As though I were a night that laid down its staff

and left a guide along its distance,

going mad when the nights groan within it,

like a bell ringing out a peal.

    أَتَأْذَنُ أنْ أُطِلَّ أنا .. سَبيلا ؟

    No one looks out from my halls;

do you permit me to look out and find a way?

Do you permit me something reaching upward,

with which I may speak when I wish?

You gave leave. I forgot myself; I see

only you, no likeness or equal.

    I forgot—who am I, then, if I see myself

and my image dissolves into the impossible?

Was my mirror a river? It flowed away,

and I glimpsed only my wound, running.

Was my voice a foal when I spoke idly?

Do you permit me to comfort myself with cooing?

Do you permit me? Over my cooing I poured

the night's lament, like sweet, flowing water.

The water of darkness crawled toward my cups

so I might drink, in its place, a sheltering shade.

A wolf howled, though I have no wilderness

and no oases to grow moist with flowing water.

It is nothingness that takes me as a friend,

as though you had never been the friend.

    أَتَأْذَنُ أنْ أظلَّ .. بها عَويلا ؟

    Ruination hangs over this place;

do you permit me to remain here, howling?

Do you permit me to have, for a little while,

my heart, so I may gather its slain pieces?

It shattered, like my mirror, into a question

about language, which tilted a little,

so that one might notice its letters are doves

flying toward doves, never turning aside.

“Is this night mine?” asked the exiles.

I said, “Has it left any alternative?”

“Is this love mine?” I was all attention.

Do you permit me to keep reminding myself?

Do you permit me my heart, so I may see myself

    as I wish—and withdraw?

I left my bag as a memory of love,

along with my small things, and the graceful one.

When morning leapt toward you, she said,

“Good morning,” then busied herself with cooing.

As though the sun, with its brow unveiled,

spread a sheltering shade over the halls.

As though the drowsy blue were my speech,

having spread its shawl, with none to equal it.

As though you were dreaming of me in a glimpse.

Do you permit me? I have left you the little that remains.
