O neighbors of the bān trees, would that those trees had never been,

Nor had we known dear friends in Wadi al-Sir.

Or would that, whenever yearning swept around us,

And assailed us with the many colors of passionate longing,

And memories of your companionship visited the soul,

It could find consolation for your absence and forgetfulness.

O neighbors of the bān trees, youth is far gone, for

Its joys have turned to anguish and sorrows.

And the nights have changed it from rebellion

Against tradition to surrender and submission.

And disappointed hopes have worn away its freshness,

And disfigured its book, both text and title.

So it became like a grave in the wilderness of Tawhara,

Tugging at cords with the night and the spirits.

And the heart became desolate, save for a lingering trace of lovesickness,

Which nearly weighs down the entrails with abandonment,

And a remnant of feeling and emotion

That poetry's tears betray at times.

So look at its haunts: how companionship has disowned them,

And how life's spreading trees are no longer lushly branched,

And how I no longer care whether she has arrived

In Amman, or Lamya has departed from Amman.

Nor do I care whether al-Habr's caravan graced her

Yesterday, or his caravan departed from her land.

I have become yesterday and despair; bring my wine-jar close,

To glorify the cup or ask the tavern's pardon.

And tell Abboud, if he directs reproach at me:

Do not dispense your preaching free of charge, O master.

For these people are my people, this is my homeland, and I

Ask the rabble for charity from my own patrimony.

And people, like the cup, are an abomination; the world, as

I have learned, has lambs that are wolves in their savagery.

And the universe is a thicket—by my life! In it I see

Only she-ghouls whispering today to ghouls.

For Umm Tannous has found our company

Beyond endurance, and has melted with shame at our remnants.

    After this—answer, O sheikh—is there any sin

Upon me if I spend my life drunk?

And how, by God, will my Lord grant me—

This being my story—pardon and forgiveness?

Abboud says: the Gardens of Bliss—at

Their gates stands a guardian whom they call Ridwan,

Who has never drunk Rahoub's water, and has no

    Homestead in Jal'ad or clan in Shihan;

And has never sought shade beneath a spreading tree in Ajloun,

    Nor driven flocks with song over the hills of al-Salt;

Nor listened to our birds before dawn,

    In the Ghor, as they fill it with singing and melodies;

Nor has a doe-fawn in Wadi al-Shita captivated him,

Nor has he pastured gazelles on the plains of al-Husn.

Nor is his ever becoming Jordanian conceivable,

Nor is there any chance of his holding Jordan sacred.

If this, O sheikh, is what your paradise is like,

Then take it far away; it is not what we seek.

And say with me, in a tongue without crookedness:

May you never be our refuge, O Garden of Paradise!

O you who ask the bān trees about the echoes of their moan,

At one time, and about their reverberation, O questioner, at another:

If questioning the echo's reverberation could avail

One wasted by a sorrow-bringing flame, it would have availed us.
