    My Layla, my Layla, time has made us wretched.

    And glory has exhausted us, and longing has worn us down.

    My Layla, my Layla, our fortune has taken flight,

    from prolonged anguish—would that anguish had never been!

    O abodes of ill omen, our newly acquired wealth has been destroyed,

    along with our ancestral wealth, by an age that has defied us.

    We have suffered calamity because fortune has thwarted us

    and allied itself with those people, the bandits of Haganah.

    أما الرزايا فقد كانت عطايانا

    People have been given what they wished for and desired;

    as for calamities, they were our gifts.

    Who would have thought the Arabs would be deceived

    by those you thought were brothers to the Arabs?

    نغدو إليك إذا ما الدهر عادانا

    Abu Talal, you are our guide today;

    we set out for you whenever time turns against us.

    We have come to you from among nomads and townspeople,

    seeking you, though our mounts have grown weary.

    فإِنك اليوم بعد اللّه ملجانا

    So take us by the hand, O son of the Prophet, and rise;

    for today, after God, you are our refuge.

    The promises they bestowed—yet never kept—

    upon us were, by my life, falsehoods.

    We have had enough of those people's promises, of their deceit

    against the Bedouin Arabs, in every shape and hue.

    We are victims of this lying—their lying—

    from the day of Hattin until today and this very moment.

    Had our statesmen fulfilled what they promised,

    what happened, my lord—what happened—would not have happened.

    فكن لها يا رعاك اللّه عنوانا

    These lands await the day of decision;

    so be their emblem—may God protect you.

    The ruins of Jaffa and Haifa—yesterday their lightning

    flickered late at night, grieving us and making us weep.

    O son of the Prophet, has not, from the people of al-Andalus,

    a woman clad in armor come to you, recounting our tales?
