Would that stopping in Wadi al-Sir were compulsory,

and would that your neighbor, O Wadi al-Shita, were mine.

Perhaps, through visions of my old passion there,

I may seek a touch of madness from the jinn-maidens of my verse.

And perhaps, before my chest hair turns white,

and the custom of their favors demands my rejection,

and the accents of passion vanish from my melody,

and longing's melodies grow averse to my lyre,

I may satisfy some of the ardent longings to which

my fingernails still cling, despite my gray hair,

and so touch longing in the ruins of my memory,

and glimpse love in the rubble of my desires,

nor see the bashful, fair-skinned women turning

away from me in disgust at my story and the news of me,

nor heed, when their tents come into view,

the words of malice as it interprets my journey.
