Do you remember—while you were among its gazelles—

Wadi al-Shita, when life was in its prime,

And the heart was drenched on every side with rapture,

Reckless rapture that had undone its heart's resolve?

Here was a love, and there a love, and a third

Reserved for you, and you among its chosen ones.

O Mayy, what ails the heart? Its beating has turned

To silence, like a dead man's silence in his shrouds.

And why has my dreams' fancy flown so low,

While my vexation goes to extremes in its persistence?

And why does grief frighten my hopes,

And despair draw them into its embrace?

And why does my demon, when I seek his inspiration for

Verse, increase the deafness in his ears?

Offer your brow; let me drink again of its blessings,

A sweetness, deprived of which I drank away my youth.

Perhaps my old inspiration will visit me again

And surround me in my loneliness with its tenderness.

O Mayy, what is my fault if youth has fled,

And gone before I reaped youth as it deserved?

And the blackness of your hair curbed its impetuosity,

And gray hair advanced toward me before its time.

O Mayy, what is my fault if my times grew tyrannical,

And my fortune's darkness persisted in its tyranny?

For a person attains whatever wishes he desires

Through striving and the support of his brothers.

Yet I am he whose loved ones denied his worth,

And their truest helped in his abandonment.

Offer your brow, for my happiness still lies—

If it draws near my lips—at its fingertips.

And pillow your head upon my chest; enough blessing for me

Is this heartbeat that you inspire.

What have I to do with their world? Your love is a realm

More exalted, whose being no harm will reach.

O Mayy, lofty Gilead, as ever,

Still rests, crouching in its place.

And the Ghor's leafy tresses still,

Together with its flowers, bend tenderly over its pools.

    And Irbid's sky—its clouds still

Water al-Husn's plains with their steady rain.

O Mayy, the doves of our lote-tree have never ceased

Singing and beating their wings upon its branches.

So tend my heart with your love, and hear

As much as you wish of my singing and its melodies.

The drinking companions' hut—its shade has dwindled,

And its courtyards lie deserted by its drinking companions.

And toward her curtained chambers she led the hut's master,

A foolish woman, his bridle's rein in her hand.

The curse of her boudoir lured him away from his fellows,

And gave him fears in exchange for his security.

And by us, that evening when he drew up his marriage contract.

So I wished I could, in protective zeal

For the hut, pull out his tongue before the contract.

Oh, pity for the hut! How vexed they grew—

The landmarks of pleasure on its face, weary with boredom!

Their cups call the cupbearers, and answering them

Comes the echo, rebounding from its walls.

And the tambourine asks about the fate of its slave-singers.

Oh, pity for the hut! Its depths

Have embraced in pity the heights of its structure.

And wept for them; they wept for its humbled plight.

Here is the violin—where is its player, whose

Violin's lament mourns the hut's wreckage?

Oh, pity for the hut! How grim have grown

The faces of its days, after their radiance!

That the palace will claim me among its sheikhs.

How strange! My gift from Talal: a turban

Broad, like the full moon in its season.

And saw that God's mercy is vaster

Than some of His servants imagine.

And witnessed how pardon lowers its veil,

Even over Pharaoh in his rebellion.

Do not be hasty, O people: my Sufism

Still stands in need of proof.

O Mayy, spring has returned, and once more haunt

My soul the temptations of its revelry and wine-jars,

And visions of wine-haze, in which I used to think myself

Khosrow Anushirwan in his palace hall.

Around me, my landed nobles clustered at my throne,

As a crowned ruler among the people of his dominion.

Until, when my soul's frame swayed

From your gaze, drunken within its eyelids,

And my head brimmed with rapture from your beauty

That wine had withheld from its drunkard,

O Mayy, the grasshoppers of our field have chirped,

And its butterflies strut in flight.

Blessed be the weak one's wings, for they

Lift him, while he remains beneath his sky.

So bring your lips close to my mouth, and pillow your head

Upon my chest; time will cease its aggression.

Alas for the lambs of imagination, for they

Are their valley's offering to its wolf.

Offer your brow, for the hills have smiled

At the glowering, harsh one in his flashing.

O Mayy, your heart was hewn from its flint.

And pillow your head upon my chest; enough blessing for you

Is this heartbeat that you inspire.
