Shall I declare what is within me, or keep it secret and conceal it?
Shall I proclaim what's inside me or keep it hidden
And how, when my face bears a sign of love?
When the love shows on my face as a token

Requite me with affection, or requite me with estrangement,
Requite with affection or distance if you wish
And do not kill me; killing me is forbidden.
But do not kill me, for that is forbidden
طَفَوتُI floated عَلىupon بَحرِthe sea of الهَوىpassion فَدَعَوتُكُمso I called to you

I floated upon the sea of passion and called to you,
I rode the sea of passion and called out to you
With the cry of a drowning man who has nothing to keep him afloat,
The call of one drowning, with no one to hold onto
لِتَستَنقِذونيso that you rescue me أَوor تُغيثواgive aid بِرَحمَةٍwith mercy

That you might rescue me, or offer merciful aid,
To save me or show mercy as a comfort
Yet you did not answer me, nor show mercy.
But you did not answer, you felt no remorse

In God's name I embarked upon the sea of love for you,
I boarded the sea of your love in God's name
So, my Lord, keep me safe! You, You are the giver of safety.
My Lord, it is You who keeps me safe and sound

I grew attached to you before I knew passion,
I clung to you before knowing this fervor
So do not kill me; I am a novice.
So do not kill me, for I am still learning

Dreams inform me that I'll be seeing you
So woe to me—how many falsehoods I dream!
But alas, how many delusions do dreams conjure

With the lovers I made the pilgrimage of passion,
With lovers, I made the pilgrimage of passion
And I am a consecrated pilgrim, clad in the garments of love for you.
Yet your love has me robed in the sacred garments
يَقولونَthey say ليto me أَخفِconceal الهَوىpassion لاdo not تَبُحdisclose بِهِof it

They say to me, 'Hide your passion; do not disclose it.'
They tell me to hide this love, do not confess it
And how, when my gaze speaks of passion?
But how can I, when my eyes speak of nothing else?
أَأَظلِمُshall I wrong? قَلبيmy heart لَيسَis not قَلبيmy heart بِظالِمٍunjust

Shall I wrong my heart? My heart is no wrongdoer,
Do I wrong my heart? No, my heart's no oppressor
But the one I love oppresses and does wrong.
But lovers act unjustly, that is their nature

Behold, she deemed great the passion that escaped me,
Does it not shock, how much love I have declared?
And what lies hidden in the heart is more dreadful and greater.
When the heart hides even more, deeper and stranger
شَكَوتُI complained of إِلَيهاto her حُبَّهاlove for her فَتَبَسَّمَتso she smiled

وَلَمand did not أَرَI see شَمساًa sun قَبلَهاbefore her تَتَبَسَّمُsmiling
I complained to her of my love for her, and she smiled,
I complained of her love, and she just smiled
And never before her had I seen a smiling sun.
Never before had I seen the sun itself smile
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her جوديbe generous فَأَبدَتthen she displayed تَجَهُّماًa scowl

So I said to her, 'Be generous'; she showed a scowl,
I said "be kind," but she showed only gloom
To kill me—oh, her beauty when she scowls!
With her beauty, she kills me when appearing glum

And I am not remiss in keeping ties with her,
In professing my love, I have been no libertine
But I fear the talebearers, so I break off.
Only fearing spies, and so playing the stoic
يُعاوِنُهاhelps her قَلبيmy heart عَلىin جَهالَةٍignorance

My heart helps her in its ignorance,
My heart abets her ignorance, and soon
And I am close to being worn out by love for her; then my heart will regret it.
Her love will fail me, and I will regret
وَكُنتُand I used to زَماناًfor a time أَجحَدُdeny الناسَpeople ذِكرَهاremembering her

And for a time I denied to others that I remembered her,
I once denied her to others, but my eyes
But tears streaming from longing gave me the lie.
Betrayed me with tears, exposing my disguise
فَأَصبَحتُso I became كَذّاباًa liar لِكِتمانِيَfor my concealing الهَوىpassion

So I became a liar for concealing my passion,
So I became a liar hiding my passion
And what I had concealed became openly known.
Yet now profess in public what I kept hidden

I reached the midst of love's sea when I sailed upon it,
I rode the mid-sea of love and it drowned me
Then its crashing surf drowned me.
Crashing waves capsizing this poor heart-laden skiff

So, by God, I do not know, and I am lost in love,
By God, confused am I, should I turn back
Should I turn back within it, or press onward?
Or press on ahead into this tempest sea?

If you would have me drink wine, do not forbid it
Then do not kill it: every dead thing is forbidden.
For all life without it is dreary and grim

We mixed blood from a mound with our own blood,
Our blood mixed on the wine-heap, so that the red
Then blood brought blood to light in our complexions.
Blended together, mine and wine's life-blood

And the company spend the night awake, drunk on it—
Some it lulls to slumber in drunken elation
On tawny wine whose victims lie asleep from drunkenness.
Others it topples stone-cold with no discrimination

To their Lord its cups flame bright crimson
A blaze the color of roses, or fiercer still.
Like roses, or deeper in color it seems to loom

Whoever blames me for revelry, or for generosity blames
If you blame me for merriment or partaking in wine
Abu Hasan, Zayd of bounty, is himself more blameworthy.
Sir, merriment flows more freely than water

By my life, how generosity has waned
No known equal when the most generous are counted.
Leaving no equal, if we count who is noblest

If Zayd has gained the sublime virtues
Abu Zayd, Muslim, generosity's brother, possessed them.
Before him Abū Zayd, brother of open hands

Of people there are but two kinds: those who crave
For him, and one overwhelmed by his favors, humbled against his will.
His gifts, and those who by force are made to serve

His enemies witness his nobility and grace
Portents of rain, whose downpour is water and blood.
As the clouds pour down, rain and blood commingle

A man whose hands lack all greed for wealth
If it is not shared out every day.
Who day by day distributes all he possesses

When he settles in a land, the poor and generosity settle there,
His treasures delight receiving suppliants
So the needy become prosperous, and the downtrodden gain honor.
As misers yearn to hoard them in their chests

Deliverance, nor a people who hoped in him become destitute.
Void of evil and stinginess, that is his creed

So their fires blaze up every day.

I adorned it with Zayd, making his name shine
The feared are terrified, and the bold risk their lives.

My dear sir, I am left with no means to reach you
And in it, the stars of night, while people slept.
Save the bond of affection remaining steadfast
بَعَثتُI summoned لَهاfor it قَلباًa heart ذَكِيّاًkeen وَفِطنَةًand insight
وَقَولَand the speech of لِسانٍa tongue صادِقٍtruthful لَيسَis not يُفحَمُsilenced
I summoned for it a keen heart and insight,
Your gifts abound, your fame is vast
And the speech of a truthful tongue that cannot be silenced.
Your honor is safeguarded, your wealth complete

When it came to me, its verse sound and straight,
Your actions are praiseworthy, your glory towering
Refined in structure, with its foundation firm,
Your generosity ever-flowing, your sea ever-foaming

I bestowed it upon Zayd, and so adorned his renown,
Just as strung pearls adorn the thread.

If Zayd, the noble chief, does not acquaint you with bounty,
Then die: bounty from anyone but Zayd is forbidden.
