O talebearer, whose harm to us did us good,
O you who reproached me, your reproach did me good
Fear of you saved my eye's pupil from drowning.
Your warning rescued my humanity from drowning
إِنّيindeed I أَصُدُّhold back دُموعاًtears لَجَّpersisted obstinately سائِقُهاtheir driver

I hold back tears whose driver is relentless,
Indeed I hold back tears whose driver rushed forth
Wounded in the eye by languid pupils.
Sick with crying, eyes overflowing with tears
إيهٍspeak on فَإِنَّfor indeed النَوىseparation وافَتhas overtaken مُصيبَتُهُits calamity
مُوَلَّعَinflamed with passion القَلبِthe heart بَينَbetween الشَوقِlonging وَالقَلَقِand anxiety
Speak on, for separation's calamity has overtaken
Alas, fate has reached its purpose in him
One whose heart is aflame between longing and anxiety.
My heart distraught, torn between yearning and disquiet

Not every reproaching woman has my ear;
Not every blamer's ear do I incline to
And you have already heard against your will—so depart.
You have heard my protest, now go away
فَماfor ... not سَلَوتُI grew indifferent to الهَوىlove جَهلاًout of ignorance بِلَذَّتِهِof its delight
وَلاnor عَصَيتُI disobeyed إِلَهَthe god of الحِلمِsound judgment عَنout of خَرَقِrashness
For I did not forsake love out of ignorance of its delight,
Neither through ignorance did I indulge desire
Nor did I defy the god of reason out of rashness.
Nor disobey the God of forbearance through impudence
