إِذاwhen خَلَتare empty مِنof حَبيبٍa beloved ليof mine مَغانيهاits haunts
إِذا خَلَت مِن حَبيبٍ لي مَغانيها
My concerns lie elsewhere than weeping for the dwelling and mourning it,
My mind is distracted from home, I weep for it and eulogize it
when its haunts are empty of a beloved of mine.
When it is devoid of a beloved companion and his melodies
دَعِlet الرَوامِسَthe dust-burying winds تَسفىscatter كُلَّماwhenever دَرَجَتthey pass

Let the dust-burying winds, whenever they pass,
Let the rains keep eroding its soil whenever they pour down
scatter its dust, and let the rains wear it away.
And let the winds sweep it away and make it barren

If the one I love is there, I stay there;
If my beloved is in it, I would stay there with him
and if he passes beyond it, why should I not pass it by?
Otherwise, why would I not abandon it
أَحَقُّmost deserving مَنزِلَةٍa dwelling بِالتَركِof abandonment مَنزِلَةٌa dwelling

The dwelling most deserving of abandonment is one
Is a dwelling not most deserving of abandonment
whose gathering places lack my soul's beloved.
When the paths of my soul's passion within it are blocked?
أَمكَنتُI granted access عاذِلَتيmy female reprover فيregarding الخَمرِwine مِنto أُذُنٍan ear

صَمّاءَ يُعيِ صَداها مَن يُناديها
I gave the woman reproaching me for wine an ear
I made my companion drunk with wine from a deaf ear
deaf, whose echo wearies whoever calls to it.
That hears its reverberations when called
وَقُلتُand I said حينَwhen أَدارَpassed around الكَأسَthe cup ليto me قَمَرٌa moon

And I said, when a moon passed me the cup:
And when a moon handed me the cup I told him
Now is the time when the bow's maker takes it up!
Now, as you draw the bow take careful aim
ياO أَملَحَloveliest الناسِof people كَفّاًin hand حينَwhen يَمزُجُهاhe mixes it

وَحينَ يَأخُذُها صِرفاً وَيُعطيها
O loveliest of people in hand, when you mix it,
O most adept of men in mixing it and serving it
and when you take it unmixed and offer it!
You have set proper limits for it, so keep it circulating between us

فَهَكَذا فَأَدِرها بَينَنا إِيها
You have settled on the measure that suits it;
If wine steals minds, your eyes steal my soul
so keep it thus, and pass it among us—go on!
When you glance at me as you fill my cup
إِنif كانَتِis الخَمرُwine لِلأَلبابِof minds سالِبَةًrobbing

فَإِنَّ عَينَيكَ تَجري في مَجاريها
If wine is a robber of minds,
In your eyelashes are spells that speak
then your eyes flow in its very channels.
With one word, though their meanings are diverse

A cup of tawny wine I drink is no different,
So drink that you may be blessed with its intoxication
to me, from a glance from you when you make it beguiling.
And the cup grants the soul what it desires

The qualities of magic speak in your two eyes,
The one with a slender waist wrapped in his cloak
one in utterance, yet manifold in their meanings.
Steps gently in delicate fabric

Drink, then, that you may enjoy its intoxication,
When I look at him, my gaze gets lost
and the cup may, for a breath, fulfill the hopes you give it.
And if I complain to him, he increases my confusion

And a slender-waisted one, with ample hips,
If not for the Trustworthy One on earth, my carefree beloveds
sways in a tender stalk with delicate contours.
Would have stolen his daughters when they were unguarded
إِذاwhen نَظَرتُI look إِلَيهِat him تاهَhe turns haughtily عَنaway from نَظَريmy gaze

When I look at him, he turns haughtily from my gaze;
God's Deputy - the obediences have yielded to him
and if I complain to him, he shows me still more haughtiness.
Though the cheeks' hair recoil, despite their grooming

Were it not for al-Amin on earth, I could not snatch
His hands have revived bounty and generosity, so they spread
the daughters of my delight when their veils appear.
Throughout the land, soaring and traversing its regions

God's caliph—through obedience to him have been humbled
His virtues have encompassed the world, and the first of them
the haughty cheeks, despite their lofty stations.
Is his help extended to the farthest ends

His two hands revived largesse and generosity, and both spread
How many hands, if thanked for the Trustee of God
throughout the earth and ranged through its regions.
Would be too humble for even the lowest of his gifts?

A noble whose ease makes wealth's necks bow down
carries his bounty to its farthest reaches.
When the money-seeker comes desiring it

How many favors from God's al-Amin—were they thanked,
Your right hand blesses us with ongoing rains
the soul would fall short of even the very least of them!
As these clouds attest, high on the horizon

A youth whose palm humbles the necks of wealth,
Quraysh took the heights of every glory
when a seeker of wealth comes to it, seeking its favor.
And your house took the highest of the high

Your right hand is all-encompassing bounty for us;
You surpassed the desert's elders and youth
this cloud high on the horizon imitates it.
And your ancestors surpassed those past

Quraysh occupies the heights of every noble virtue,
You built your house high in glorious heights
and your house occupies the highest of those heights.

You surpassed mankind, both mature and young,
When people compete for the peaks of glory
and your departed forefathers surpassed its men of old.
Your palm falls below no other in containing them

You raised your house in the lofty heights of nobility,
God's Deputy - if his merits were counted
whose lowest steps the star falls short of reaching.
The counters would fall short in enumerating them

People never race toward the goals of nobility
The Trustworthy races the kings of all people
without your hand, ahead of all others, already holding them.
With no precedence in his principles

God's caliph—if his virtues were counted,
Your virtues have reached the unreachable, connected to it
few among the reckoners could enumerate them.
While those aspiring to them fall short

O most generous people when finding relief
and no one outstripped him at the race's beginning.

Your noble deeds reached al-Ayyuq and joined
We do not fear the turns of fate as long as
with it, while anyone striving to rival them fell short.
Our palms are tied to your ropes maneuvering them

O most generous of men, when you are looked to in a calamity
The Imam satisfied all with his nobility
that the happenings of time bring forth and deliver!
And surpassed them by the houses of glory he builds

We do not fear the reversals of time, as long as
Your Lord saw you worthy of it and granted you it
our hands cling to cords from you, milking their bounty.
So remain living joyfully and comfortably in it

The Imam matched all mankind, taken together,
Harun revived and established the virtues
and surpassed them with the houses of glory he builds.
While you, son of Ghurr, make them endure
رَآكَdeemed you رَبُّكَyour Lord أَهلاًworthy إِذwhen حَباكَHe endowed you بِهاwith them

Your Lord deemed you worthy when He bestowed them on you;
O stabilizer of the kingdom when its pillars weakened
so live on and remain in joy, at ease within them.
And the blind strife rose against it in rebellion

Harun revived the noble virtues and established them,
How many deadly stabs you have for the enemies
and you, among men, O son of the bright-browed, carry them forward.
That hasten them from spewing their spittle

When you marched against the enemies at dawn
and the instigator of blind sedition rises up!
Not caring for them besides the cowards amongst them

You dealt them deaths from which there is no escape
wide-gaping, killing them before its healer can breathe a charm!
And you stood by the souls of truth, reviving them

You extinguished in the East fires stoked to rage
no coward before them, paying them no heed,
That the Islam had difficulty concealing

you apportioned among them deaths that spared no one,
Until you were sent against them as a mercy, so their fires
and stood beside the souls of truth, giving them life.
Subsided through you, their snakes scattered

You quenched blazing fires in the East,
God does not let people you rule be lost
whose quencher had proved hard for Islam to find,
Nor does He make a land of which you are the governor desolate
حَتّىuntil بُعِثتَyou were sent عَلَيهاagainst them رَحمَةًas a mercy فَخَبَتand went out

their fires through you, and their vipers crumbled.

God has not forsaken a people whom you have come to rule,
nor abandoned lands whose governor you are.
