أَحَقٌّis it true أَنَّهُthat he أَودىhas perished يَزيدُYazid
تَأَمَّلconsider أَيُّهاO you الناعيthe herald of death المُشيدُcrying aloud
Is it true that Yazid has perished?
Consider, O herald proclaiming his death aloud.
تَأَمَّلconsider مَنwhom نَعَيتَyou announced dead وَكَيفَand how فاهَتspoke
بِهِof it شَفَتاكَyour two lips كانَmay there be بِهاupon them الصَعيدُdust
Consider whom you have announced dead, and how it passed
Your lips—may dust cover them!
أَحامىhas the defender المَجدِof glory وَالإِسلامِand Islam أَودىperished
فَماthen what لِلأَرضِfor the earth وَيحَكَwoe to you لاnot تَميدُsways
Has the defender of glory and Islam perished?
Then why, woe to you, does the earth not quake?
تَأَمَّلconsider هَلwhether تَرىyou see الإِسلامَIslam مالَتhave tilted
دَعائِمُهُits pillars وَهَلand whether شابَhas turned gray الوَليدُthe newborn
Consider: do you see Islam's
Pillars leaning? And has the newborn turned gray?
وَهَلand whether شيمَتwere sheathed سُيوفُthe swords of بَنيthe sons of نِزارٍNizar
وَهَلand whether وُضِعَتwere laid عَلىupon الخَيلِthe horses اللُبودُthe felt saddlecloths
And have the swords of Nizar's sons been sheathed?
And have felt saddlecloths been laid upon the horses?
وَهَلand whether تَسقيwater البِلادَthe lands عِشارُshe-camels ten months pregnant مُزنٍof rain clouds
بِدِرَّتِهاwith their flowing milk وَهَلand whether يَخضَرُّgrows green عودُa branch
And do rain clouds, like pregnant she-camels, water the lands
With their flowing milk? And does a branch grow green?
أَماwas it not هُدَّتshattered لِمَصرَعِهِby his fall نِزارٌNizar
بَلىyes indeed وَتَقَوَّضَand collapsed المَجدُglory المَشيدُloftily built
Was Nizar not shattered by his fall?
Yes, and towering glory collapsed.
وَحَلَّand settled in ضَريحَهُhis tomb إِذwhen حَلَّhe settled فيهِin it
طَريفُnewly acquired المَجدِglory وَالحَسَبُand noble lineage التَليدُage-old
And his tomb received, when he entered it,
New-won glory and age-old nobility.
أَمّاindeed وَاللَهِby God لاnot تَنفَكُّcease عَينَيmy eye
عَلَيكَfor you بِدَمعِهاwith its tears أَبَداًforever تَجودُpours freely
Indeed, by God, my eye shall never cease
To pour out its tears for you forever.
فَإِنfor if تَجمُدrun dry دُموعُthe tears of لَئيمِan ignoble man of قَومٍa tribe
فَلَيسَthen there is no لِدَمعِfor the tears of ذيone possessing حَسَبٍnoble lineage جُمودُdrying up
For if the tears of a tribe's ignoble man run dry,
Yet the tears of one of noble lineage never run dry.
أَبَعدَis it after يَزيدَYazid تَختَزِنُhoard البَواكيthe mourning women
دُموعاًtears أَوor تُصانُare protected لَهاfor them خُدودُcheeks
After Yazid, can the mourning women hoard
Their tears, or can their cheeks be spared?
لِتَبكِكَlet it weep for you قُبَّةُthe tent of الإِسلامِIslam لَمّاnow that
وَهَتhave weakened أَطنابُهاits guy ropes وَوَهىand has weakened العَمودُthe tent pole
Let the tent of Islam weep for you, now that
Its ropes have slackened and its pole has weakened.
وَيَبكِكَand let him weep for you شاعِرٌa poet لَمdid not يُبقِleave دَهرٌtime
لَهُfor him نَشَباًwealth وَقَدand already كَسَدَhas lost its market القَصيدُpoetry
And let a poet weep for you: time has left
Him no wealth, and verse has lost its market.
فَمَنso whom يَدعوwill summon الإِمامَthe imam لِكُلِّfor every خَطبٍcalamity
يَنوبُbefalls وَكُلَّand every مُعضِلَةٍgrave difficulty تَؤودُweighs down
So whom will the imam summon for every calamity
That befalls, and every crushing difficulty?
وَمَنand who يَحميwill defend الخَميسَthe army إِذاwhen تَعاياis at a loss
بِحيلَةِfor a stratagem نَفسِهِof his own البَطَلُthe hero النَجيدُvaliant
And who will defend the army when
The valiant hero can devise no stratagem of his own?
فَإِنfor if يَهلِكperishes يَزيدُYazid فَكُلُّthen every حَيٍّliving being
فَريسٌslain prey لِلمَنِيَّةِto death أَوor طَريدُhunted quarry
For if Yazid perishes, then every living being
Is death's prey, or quarry it pursues.
أَلَمhave you not تَعجَبmarveled لَهُat him أَنَّthat المَناياthe powers of death
فَتَكنَslew treacherously بِهِhim وَهُنَّthough they were لَهُhis جُنودُsoldiers
Have you not marveled at his fate—that the powers of death
Slew him treacherously, though they were his soldiers?
لَقَدindeed عَزّىhas consoled رَبيعَةَRabi'a أَنَّthat يَوماًa day
عَلَيهاupon her مِثلَlike يَومِكَyour day لاwill not يَعودُreturn
Indeed, it has consoled Rabi'a that a day
Like yours will never come upon her again.
