If you serve something other than wine, then give me

A cup from your mouth that I delight in, one that heals me.

Your eyes are my wine, and your words to me my sweet basil.

And your cheeks’ color, the color of roses, suffices me.

If a scruple forbids me to drink wine,

Then the wine of your eye suffices me and satisfies me.

Were it not for signs of gray hair—which would admonish me if they came—

I would indeed have sobered up; but they will come to me.

I am content with youth; so if I perish, it is by fate,

And if I live on, gray hair will surely console me.
