وَشَمَّرَت هِمَمُ العُذّالِ في العَذَلِ
I was given a libertine's loose rein, amorous in youthful folly,
In youth I was dragged by the rope of an infamous one, spun
and the reproachers' resolve girded itself for reproach.
And the resolves of the jealous were determined in separation

Tears were stirred in the far-roaming eye by a love
Sorrow overflowed for the ambitious eye that loved
divided between farewell and departure.
Dispersed between bidding farewell and enduring

How can a heart find forgetfulness when it has gone distracted,
How can there be solace for a heart that has gone mad
raving over one whose heart is not distracted?
Raving for the companion of a heart that is not mad

On the morning of parting, consolation was defied by a stream
Disobeying solace the morning after separation, broken
of tears that flowed in the wake of another stream.
With tears flowing in the wake of the broken one

If not for the pretense of the eye's tears, my hidden secrets
secrets of mine never shown nor suspected.
Would have been revealed that did not appear nor were perfected

Is the separation not enough that I was struck by its arrows
that it also struck me with the gaze of wide eyes?
Until it struck me with the glances of the beautiful eyes

longing were stolen greetings exchanged with the eyes.
Was a fleeting, furtive surrender with reserve

What would it matter to fate if its chalice was mixed
and restored to my head the intoxication of love?
And the intoxication of youth returned to my head

The sin of events for me is that they secretly stole
from me the daughters nurtured by vines and curtained bowers.
The daughters of my generosity and weariness

And a night I stole from a year
in which I laid a partridge's egg bare in youthful folly.
In which youth uncovered for me the eggs of rhyme

My days and I today have no great age
drinking wine and the music of an unadorned singing girl.
Drinking wine and playing the rebeck of leisure

by my complaint, and her cheeks reddened with shame.
My complaint making its cheeks red from shyness

I rewarded it with praise in which there is no affectation

with the sword's hilt, not deceit and stratagems.
With the riser of the sword, not by cunning and tricks

as though he were appointed death hastening toward hope.
As if he is a fate hastening toward hope

he finds no comfort in days or turns of fortune.
He does not rest for days and dynasties

Time's earlier ages envy its later ones,
So time envies its former ones its latter ones
since he had not existed in its earliest ages.
As there was none like him in its early eras

If al-Shariki boasts over no one,
If the Sharqi is not boastful over anyone
Glory speaks for him without false claims.
Pride itself speaks of him without affectation

in an inheritance among Banu Shayban that has never ceased.
An inheritance in Bani Shayban unceasing

They drew their swords and overwhelmed those who fought them,
They asked the swords so they covered those who fought them
striking with them, neither cowards nor men who rely on others.
Showing them devoid of refusal or acceptance

The Za'idis are a people whose spears hold
The Zaydis a people, in their spears

Is the fear of the fearful and safety of the anxious fearful

Their elder is unmatched by the firm-set mountains
Their elder, astride, the firmaments do not stand
in forbearance, and their child has a mature man's bearing.
In forbearance and their child in mature guidance

Stay safe, Yazid, for there is no crookedness in religion
Yazid submitted so there is no enmity in religion
if you are safe, and no defect in kingship.
When you submit and no void in the kingdom

You steadied the legs of Islam's sons, and they stood firm
He affirmed the market of the people of Islam so it straightened
on the day of al-Khalij, though they had stood on slippery ground.
The day of al-Khalij when it stood on frauds

Had you not warded off the Romans' might when they came at dawn
If not for your defense the harm of Rome when it attacked
from religion's kindred, that kin would not have escaped bereavement.
The Prophet's family would not have felt safe from loss

And Yusuf al-Barm—you attacked his army at dawn
And Yusuf al-Barmak, you left his camp's morning
with a clamorous army spewing forth destinies.
With a camp spewing out fates with fervor

You surprised him during his respite, on the day beyond the river,
You respited him the day of crossing the river, his chance
when in war he had sheltered himself behind delays.
While he was confined in war with respite

And the defector ibn Tariq, you charged against him
with an army pouring down deaths in torrents.
With an army facilitating deaths, pouring calamity

When he saw you glorified in his death
and that repelling you was impossible through stratagems,
And that driving you back could not be done by tricks

he surveyed the combat, and you flashed the encounter before him,
He risked the battle so you lightened the encounter for him
stepping forward into it, relying on no one.
Putting forward in it steps without reliance

They died with you a burning rancor in their breasts,
They died while you were resting in their breasts
while your sword was sought to cure burning rancor.
As your sword was healing from bonds

Al-Walid would have won the toast of the virtuous of traits

Its pillars leaning were made upright

Other than like ostriches scattered in haste

They repented but if they did not repent their sins
your army would have returned with captives and spoils.
Your army would have come back with prisoners and spoils

How many secure people far from home, defiant
you drove out of the fortresses of kingship and retainers!
You brought out from the citadels of kingship and fortresses

Wrath, a sword, honor not degraded

Who do not falter nor deliver from faltering

You left their bodies as birds encamped
over them, and sent them back as heads with the homeward-bound.
Upon them and drove them confused with the lock

That is what the Bani Shayban have of peers

How many scenes for you whose merits cannot be counted
in which you apportioned shares like the sustenance of men and jinn!
You apportioned in them like the sustenance of mankind and beasts

You and your son pillars of that mountain

They magnified you so you are not called for slightness
only for a stubborn difficulty that runs amid hardships.
Except for an ordeal ameliorated with determination

which exhausted champions who sought it but could not attain it!
The grandees strived for it but did not attain

People busied themselves with the world and its vanity
while you are one occupied with that kindness.
While you were occupied by that known kindness

Your tongue refuses to deny generosity to its seeker,
Your tongue refuses to deny a request of your generosity
so it never stammers between generosity and avarice.
So it does not waver between generosity and stinginess

You believed my assumption and the assumptions in it
and your generosity removed the saddle-knot from my camel.
Your generosity transcended the knots of traveling from my camel
