كَمhow many رَأَيناwe have seen مِنof أُناسٍpeople هَلَكواthey perished
فَبَكىso wept أَحبابُهُمtheir loved ones ثُمَّthen بُكواwere wept for
How many people have we seen perish!
How many people have we seen perish,
So their loved ones wept, then were themselves wept for.
Then their loved ones wept, and then wept again.
تَرَكواthey left الدُنِّياthe world لِمَنto those who بَعدَهُمafter them
وَدَّهُمtheir wish لَوif only قَدَّمواthey had sent ahead ماwhat تَرَكواthey left behind
They left the world to those who came after them.
They left this world for those after them,
They wished they had sent ahead what they left behind.
If only they had given what they left behind.
كَمhow many رَأَيناwe have seen مِنof مُلوكٍkings سوقَةًcommoners
وَرَأَيناand we have seen سوقَةًcommoners قَدalready مَلَكواthey became kings
How many kings have we seen become commoners!
How many kings have we seen led in shackles,
And we have seen commoners who had become kings.
And we have seen those in shackles become kings.
قَلَبَturned الدَهرُTime عَلَيهِمagainst them وَرِكاًa hip
فَاِستَدارواso they turned حَيثُwherever دارَturned الفَلَكُthe celestial sphere
Time turned its hip against them,
Time turned its wheel upon them,
So they turned wherever the celestial sphere turned.
And they cycled where the stars cycle.
