How many a favor of the rose is gratefully acknowledged

By me—yet none is like the narcissus's favor.

The rose comes while the faces of the hills

Smile, revealing one clad in a smooth mantle.

And they have adorned themselves with necklaces of dew,

Growing in the earth, though never planted.

And you will not see the narcissus until you see

The lavender meadow in threadbare raiment,

And the crosswind wears out what was renewed

By the hands of morning rains in the sheen of fine silk.

There it comes to you, a stranger, amid

The longing of eyes and souls.
