He forsook youthful folly and repented, though still rapturous.

And indeed, he once could scarcely repent.

His bloom vanished at the first calamity,

And gray hair crept across the first bloom of youth.

The days hurled him amid crushing blows

That misfortunes and disasters bring with them.

How wondrous you were, by God, when youthful folly doted on you,

And when passion, for you, both drew and was drawn.

    نَطَقتَ بِها مِن مُقلَتَيكَ غُروبُ

    A hidden longing loosened your knee-bindings;

You spoke of it in streams of tears from your eyes.

Why did you not swiftly quell your tears with firm resolve?

Rather, you had no share in consolation.

After his headlong flight into forgetfulness, he was turned back

By memories brought back by a vanquished passion.

Time half-closed an approving eye for him,

Yet over him it stood, a guard and a watcher,

Until, when his wishes had fallen into place,

Calamities began battering them as they came to him.

    هَل تَستَطيعُ اللَهوَ حينَ تَشيبُ

    Take the days of your youth for youthful folly;

Can you make merry when your hair turns gray?

O man who makes his wealth grow,

While he is despoiled, his honor plundered,

Leave noble deeds alone; you have been spared their pursuit

By their Sa'dan and his scion Ya'qub.

That is the hope in whose bounty refuge is sought

From the calamities of time whenever they strike.

Like a mature man, though in youth's first bloom, he is adorned

By maturity's forbearance; his youth is discerning.

And when Time assails you, he shields you from it—

A radiant, highborn man of the house of Sa'dan.

Overflowing with bounty, his chambers thronged,

Easy in giving, looked to with hope and feared.

He gives to you as one who commands his wealth,

Not like one who gives to you while fearful.

Filling the eyes, his sword-belt drawn up,

Astute in the ways of affairs, a physician to them.

He divides his efforts, either to bestow a gift,

Or to face a calamity for which he is summoned, and answers.

Wide-ranging in judgment; mingled with it,

In his conduct, are encouragement and intimidation.

A chieftain in ambition, when his breast is inhabited

By unrest with which slumber contends, and throbbing.

He carries through affairs whose essentials are obscure,

And spacious is the arena of the mind's wrestling.

Resolve has gathered its farthest reaches to you,

Reaching behind an affair while it is still unfamiliar.

He carries affairs through with the resolve of a single judgment,

By which keeping far and drawing near are raised high.

His deliberation casts what is seen into the inner mind,

    Until testing divulges its secret.

Unyielding toward opinions, balanced in desire,

Fierce in what men have mastered, ever victorious.

And it is as though, through his bounty, there wept upon you

Steady rains, beneath which a downpour sang.

Scorning desire that runs headlong toward lewdness,

He aims his surmise at the hidden mind, bringing on gray hair.

Of the house of Sa'dan, through whose earnest striving

The defense of honor was attained, and refinement perfected.

    تَسمو إِلَيهِم أَعيُنٌ وَقُلوبُ

    In beneficence they dwelt upon the peaks of glory;

Eyes and hearts rise toward them.

Again, O Ya'qub, I have known favors from you,

Praiseworthy ones; my acquaintance with them is recent.

You gave to me until I possessed the full measure of wealth,

Through your bounty; one who hopes in you is not disappointed.

And you promised me, then followed your promise with a gift

That neither reminders of favor nor reproach followed.
