Expectations have kept me waiting for your bounty,

and my praise, lofty in splendor, is precious.

Not in proportion to what you have endured has the

thanks from me reached you; then I would indeed be cheated.

And when an expectation concerning you fails me,

and certainty from you dispels its doubt,

my hope for a return grows faint,

and “perhaps” and “it will be” hold sole sway over it.

And my soul shielded you from reproach, until

it yielded to the reins, stubborn though it was.

And by my life, if I sought for my thanks

a price, then I would surely be miserly.

And a brother from whom I expected bounty gave nothing,

though he was full of wealth, potbellied.

Had the world brought you what it had brought him,

hundreds would have been deemed little in your hands.

After long forbearance, I was held back from him

by a character shielded from the bounty of the base.

Grief mingled him with those who had died, until

death made losing him easy for me.
