واكَبِداًalas for the liver! أَحرَقَhas burned الهَوىpassion كَبِديmy liver
عيلَwas exhausted اِصطِباريmy patience وَخانَنيand betrayed me جَلديmy fortitude
Alas for my liver! Passion has burned my liver.
My love consumed my liver as flames
My patience is exhausted, and my fortitude has betrayed me.
My patience failed me and my composure betrayed me
كُسيتُI was clothed ثَوبَgarment البِلىdecay لِأَلبِسَهُso I might wear it
فَقَدfor indeed جَفاhung loose وَالمَليكَby the Sovereign عَنaway from جَسَديmy body
I was clothed in the robe of decay to wear it;
I donned the garment of withering so I may wear it
for, by the Sovereign, it hangs loose from my body.
Yet it was unfaithful and the angel left my body
أَعشَبَsprouted grass خَدّيmy cheek مِنَfrom البُكاءِweeping وَقَدand already
أَورَقَput forth leaves غُصنُthe branch الهَوىpassion عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver
My cheek has sprouted grass from weeping, and already
My cheeks grew green from weeping, while
the branch of passion has put forth leaves upon my liver.
The branch of passion flourished over my liver
وَطارَand flew away نَوميmy sleep فَالعَينُso the eye تَندُبُهُmourns it
وَجداًin anguish عَلَيهِover it وَعادَنيand visited me سُهُديmy sleeplessness
And my sleep has flown away, so my eye mourns it,
My sleep took flight, so my eyes lament it
in anguish over it; and my sleeplessness has visited me.
With heartache for it, and grief has resurged within me
ماhow أَوجَعَpainful الحُبَّlove لِلقُلوبِto hearts وَماand how

How painful love is to hearts, and how
How excruciating is love for hearts, and how
its sorrow makes even tearless eyes weep!
Its ardour makes eyes shed copious tears
ياO أَعدَلَmost just الناسِpeople فيin حُكومَتِهاher judgment

O most just of people in her judgment,
O most just of people in their rule
you have wronged us in love, so be moderate.
Be equitable with me in love, and be moderate

You have brought hot tears to my eye, if your estrangement does not
My eyes grew inflamed, for your abandonment
cease, whether I am near you or far away.
Does not cease, whether you are near or far
إِنّيindeed I عَلىdespite هَجرِكُمyour abandonment لَمُنتَظِرٌsurely waiting

Indeed, despite your abandonment, I await
For your estrangement, I shall wait expectantly
the reunion I hope for, until eternity's end.
My hope for reunion until the end of time
