    A phantom from the far-off, ever-distant beloved

stole through the night, and his firm resolve to endure stole away.

It summoned a longing, until, when that longing answered it,

it hovered about a sleepless man with stricken eyelids.

So he spent the night confiding in the star, until it was as though

a sore-eyed man's night were stealing sleep from his eyes.

Whenever solace reaches the core of his heart,

two arrows feathered with antimony kohl turn his longing back.

The face of consolation appears to him, yet he is hurled

by passion along a course not rightly guided.

Whenever sleep befriends his eyelids, they parcel out

his slumber—the agonies of ever-renewed love.

As for your reproach, I have not harshly rejected a rebuke

that appeared as counsel from your heart; so be moderate.

A racking sorrow has stood in the way of the man's resolve,

and his heart, which pines whenever longing rises,

and a flock of sorrows, for which his breast is clenched

around a choking anguish; whoever meets it is bewildered.

They sent a greeting to their lovers

with glances from eyes that bore witness yet denied.

And when passion reared its head and love moved

through them, and the steadfast one's confession alarmed them,

they turned aside, standing, and their throats rose high

above swelling breasts, their outer wraps split open around them.

That evening longing's fright passed, and there collapsed

before its witness my remaining resolve and my reprover.

The watchers restored composure to him, and it brought him back

to the resolve of a lovesick, distracted man.

In him, against the concealment of sincere love conspire

outpourings in thronging flocks of tears.

Toward you, O God's trusted one, the sandgrouse rose at our approach,

daughters of the wastes, in every continuous stretch of soft ground.

Journeys and deserts brought she-camels to kneel before you,

sent toward you by the hopes of drowsing visitors.

They seized upon night-travel with fierce force, and swift became

their strides beneath them, while the star was bewildered yet guided.

And when night unsheathed the morning, they reached it

at the fringe of its rose-flushed dawn.

They wore the darkness until they shed it, and downward sank

the leading stars of night, as though rolled by a hand.

The riders take their midday rest atop their saddles

when each blaze of heat forbids touching the pebbles.

And a fearsome waste that cuts the wayfarer's feet,

as though a file's sharp edge lay along its reaches,

moaning with the breaths of winds, defiant

toward the riders, resisting every sturdy camel—

in its empty expanses the eye's range is shortened

by outcrops of smooth stone upon it, and massive boulders,

girdled there in mirage, as though they were

    men seated in patterned mantles.

When movements rouse it, the echo comes to rest

on taunting notes from a hoopoe's chants.

I reached its farthest end toward you, though before it lay

a shearing-ground for the necks of swift, towering camels,

on a broad-cheeked, lean she-camel whose vigor is renewed

by the vigor of night-travel and the blazing star.

Whenever she strikes sparks from one pebble, she hurls it away,

so it flies into another, even without her intending it.

The hardy she-camels bore to you a traveler stopping for night-rest,

sustained by hope, a rover of high, rugged desert.

Misfortunes appeared before him until, once he gained

hope in you, they turned from him after only a brief acquaintance.

You set conjectures on the clear path, and they became plain,

and every fugitive submitted to your judgment.

When a people's desires differ, you bring them together

through pardon or the edge of the Indian-forged sword.

    وَإِن أَصحَروا كانوا فَريسَةَ مُرصِدِ

    If they hide in burrows, it drives them out with terror;

and if they venture into the open, they are an ambusher's prey,

on every swimming-gaited steed amid dust, as though

the wings of a swift ostrich enfolded its two flanks.

When they plunge into darkness bearing plunder,

they divide the night-march across every plain and hard tract.

As though the men's hands, in pairs and singly,

were passing saffron over a plastered surface.

They greeted one another with spearpoints, and embraced

with the embrace of hatred, not of affection.

And you surprised him with his death before threatening him,

when 'perhaps' and 'as though already' had proved powerless against him.

And he feared you until he grew suspicious of his hopes

and distrusted his soul's secret whispers when alone.
