The night itself awoke, so I said, “Welcome

to the one who dyed the day and flowed as shadow.”

She came to me, asking the yearning one for patience

before a body by which lovers lie slain.

And she began shedding longings, intoxicated,

    sweet-lipped, soft-cheeked, shy.

Her figure is the goblet’s, when it passes among us,

and her legs are marble when they come into view.

As though water were her cloak, and it flows

over two breasts that emerged in thirst.

She enfolded me beneath her; I no longer knew

whether wine had taken the lips by surprise, or not.

I kissed and was not sated, and came to know

that we were... a little girl overwhelming a little boy.

I mounted the horses; I did not hold back my right hand.

When I rise, generosity becomes stinginess.

And whenever I planted the moist branch,

it grew in pleasure, and she watered it with coquetry.

Like a virgin fending off fear, she sighed

and cast a rope down to the bottom of the well.

It yearned with longing, like a sword that visited a sheath,

it hesitated to enter, then deepened the union.

It wept over the dusky lips when we had drunk our fill.

For the thirsty have never come to a pool like Layla’s.
