It is love's good fortune that I am a lover,

So I may complete for lovers the description of its torment.

And I seek every poem written about it,

To strip the dreams from its writers.

For I have passed by a thousand thirsty hearts,

And learned that water fills its mirage.

And, inspired, I boarded a vessel for truth,

And forgot that illusion was among its passengers.

Abla's love for the young man was no sham,

When longing overran his gleaming lances.

How greatly what Qays said of passion awed me,

Until I deemed passionate love one of his pupils.

And I heard what Buthayna's lips whispered,

When Jamil favored her with his saliva.

    شقَّ التُرابَ مُعاتبــًا لِغُرابهِ

    Qabil went utterly mad when he was seared;

He split the earth, reproaching his raven.

This is my brother—but my love is my killer.

And love, you there, means following its quest.

O love, wait—we have squandered our love,

Since the poets ceased versifying its reproaches.

So they rushed headlong into verse with every seduction,

And the heart is buried alive in soil not its own.

Each assigns the prey its role,

And sharpens a blade from the artistry of his falsehood.

For love, O people of passion, is a crime,

In which the victims are alike in bearing its punishment.

Ask one who departs how his departure folded up

The heart of a woman in love—she asks what ails him.

He inhabited all the women, experimenting,

And treachery prayed in the heaven of his prayer niche.

And betrayal has brandished a sword of its own,

To enrage fidelity's sword in its sheath.

Behold, I have fallen in love, and passion's robe has wrapped me,

And I mended my heart with silk from its garments.

And brought my life back from timeworn middle age,

After the inmost heart of its youth had departed.

She broke her heart's virginity so that I might become her,

So I inhabited it, then humbled myself at its door.

I shall teach lovers that my love

Is water that spills over the dew with its bubbles.

For I am love's captive and love-crazed when we meet,

And I am love's adversary in its absence.

By God, if passion were ours to own,

Lovers would share the role of bringing it to ruin.

But it comes from a wisdom that will be attained

By whoever spurns love's husk, not its kernel.
