قد علا قومك عن لون ودم

وعلا أسوده حمر الأمم

Your people have risen beyond color and blood,

And their black-skinned man has risen above the red-skinned of nations.

في وضوء قطرة من قنبر

هي أغلى من دم من قيصر

A drop from Qanbar's ablution

Is more precious than blood from Caesar.

اتركن عما وأما وأبا

وكسلمان إلى الدين انسبا

Set aside paternal uncle, mother, and father,

And, like Salman, trace your lineage to the faith.

يا خليلي اسمع حديثي واعقلا

من خلايا النحل هذا المثلا

O my friend, hear my words and understand

This parable from the hives of bees:

قطرة من شقر كالقبس

ثم أخرى من بياض النرجس

A drop from flame-red anemones,

Then another from the whiteness of narcissus.

لم تقل هذي أنا نيلوفر

أو تقل هاتيك إني عبهر

This one did not say, "I am a water lily,"

Nor did that one say, "I am a narcissus."

شأن إبراهيم في ملتنا

دين إبراهيم فيه شهدنا

Abraham's way is in our community;

Our honey lies within Abraham's faith.

إن جعلت الدم ركن الملة

صدعت دعواك جمع الإخوة

If you make blood the community's foundation,

Your claim will shatter the brothers' unity.

في ثرانا ليس ينمو بزر كا

أنت ما أسلم حقا فكركا

Your seed does not grow in our soil;

As for you, your thinking has not truly embraced Islam.

ابن مسعود سراج المتقين

جسمه والروح وجد المخبتين

Ibn Mas'ud, the lamp of the God-fearing—

His body and soul embodied the rapture of the humbly devout.

أج من موت أخيه صدره

وأذاب القلب منه جمره

His breast blazed at his brother's death,

And the embers within him melted his heart.

لم يجف الدمع من حرقته

ناح نوح الأم في لوعته

The tears of his burning grief did not dry;

In his anguish he wailed as a mother wails.

آه للقارئ درس العظة

ورفيقي في طلاب الحكمة

Alas for the reciter of the lesson of admonition,

And my companion in the quest for wisdom!

آه للسرو الذي قد ورفا

وشريكي في ولاء المصطفى

Alas for the cypress that had spread its shade,

And my partner in devotion to the Chosen One!

ما من الأنساب يقوى وصلنا

ليس من روم وعرب أصلنا

Our bond is not strengthened by lineage;

Our origin is neither Roman nor Arab.

إنما حب الحجازي الحبيب

قد حبانا ذاكم الوصل القريب

Only love for the beloved Hijazi

Has granted us that close bond.

حسبنا آصرة من حبه

حسب عين نشوة في قربه

A bond of love for him suffices us;

For an eye, the rapture of nearness to him is enough.

جدد الدهر بنا سيرته

مذ حوت أعراقنا نشوته

Time has renewed his way through us,

Since our veins came to hold his rapture.

عشقه سر اجتماع الأمة

نبضت منه عروق الملة

Love for him is the secret of the community's unity;

From it, the veins of the community pulsed.

صلة العشق لنا أقوى سبب

هو في الروح وفي الجسم النسب

The bond of passionate love is our strongest tie;

It is lineage in both soul and body.

أيها العاشق خل النسبا

خل إيران وخل الغربا

O lover, set lineage aside;

Set Iran aside, and set the West aside.

نور حق مثله أمته

قد نمت أغصاننا دوحته

His community, like him, is a light of Truth;

His spreading tree has made our branches grow.

نور حق ما حواه نسب

ثوب حق لا سدى أو لحمة

A light of Truth that no lineage has contained;

A robe of Truth, with neither warp nor weft.
