إذَاwhen تَذَكَّرْتُI remember سُوحَthe open grounds of نَجْدNajd
أَرَىI see بِقَلْبيin my heart رَجَاhope رُجُوعِهْits return
When I remember the open grounds of Najd,
When I recall the plains of Najd
I see in my heart hope of its return.
My heart sees hope of returning there
لكِنَّbut فيin ساكِنِيهِits inhabitants لُؤماًbaseness
نَفَّرَنيturned me away عَنْfrom رُباthe hills of رُبوعِهْits abodes
But baseness in its inhabitants
But in its dwellers there is vileness
Has turned me away from the hills of its abodes.
That drives me from the thought of going back
قَوْمٌa people لَهُمْthey have فيin الْمَغَيبِabsence ذَمٌّdisparagement
يَسْطَعُstrikes رَأسِيmy head سَطاassailed fiercely سُطوعِهْits striking
A people whose disparagement behind one's back
A people with shamefulness in absence
Strikes my head with its fierce onslaught.
My head bows in shame at the thought of them
