هذَاthis مَقامُthe station of العائِذِthe seeker of refuge
بِذِيwith the Possessor of الجَلالِmajesty اللائِذِthe one seeking shelter
This is the station of one seeking refuge,
This is the refuge of one who seeks
sheltering with the Possessor of Majesty,
The Owner of Majesty, my only hope,
مِنْfrom زَلّةِa slip of اللّسانِthe tongue
وهَفْوَةِand a lapse of الجَنانِthe heart
from a slip of the tongue,
From slip of tongue and straying thoughts,
and a lapse of the heart,
And deeds gone wrong and words not true.
وسَيّىءand evil الأعْمالِdeeds
وَزائِفِand false الأَقْوالِwords
and evil deeds,
If He's no mercy for me, what can guard me?
and false words.
Yet good opinion's all I have to give me hope.
إنif لَمْnot يَكُنْHe is ليto me راحِماmerciful
فأيُّthen what شَيْءthing ليfor me حِمَىa refuge
If He is not merciful to me,
I'm the evildoer, the confessor,
then what can be my refuge?
Not one to deny the sins I bear.
لَكِنَّyet حُسْنَthe goodness of ظَنِّيmy expectation
هُوit مُنْيَةُthe wish of المتَمَنِّيthe one who longs
Yet my good hope
is the wish of one who longs.
أناI المسيءُthe wrongdoer لامِراbeyond dispute
لَسْتُI am not لِذَنْبيof my sin مُنْكِرَاa denier
I am the wrongdoer, beyond dispute;
I do not deny my sin.
