يُجاهِرُنيopenly affronts me الْعَدُوُّthe enemy بِكُلِّwith every نُكْرٍoutrage
ويَنْصُرُand supports مَنْthe one whom أصادِقُهُI befriend him الأَعادِيthe enemies
The enemy openly affronts me with every outrage,
The enemy rebukes me with every insult,
And the one I befriend supports my enemies.
And supports those I call foes.
ويُبْعِدُنيand drives me away الْقَريبُthe close one بلاwithout احْتِشامٍshame
ويِزْدادُand grows الْبَعيدُthe distant one مِنَin البعادِdistance
And the one close to me drives me away without shame,
The near ones distance me without respect,
And the distant one grows still more distant.
While those far grow further in their remoteness.
ويَطْوِيand withholds الْبِشْرَcheerful welcome عَنِّيfrom me منْthe one whom أُصَافِيI sincerely befriend
ويَنْسَىand forgets ماwhat لَدَيْهِhe has مِنَof الأَيادِيfavors
And the one I sincerely befriend withholds his smiles from me,
People hide kindness from me though we were intimate,
And forgets the favors he has received.
And forget the favors I did them.
وذَنْبِيand my offense عِنْدin the eyes of إِخْوانِيmy brothers بأَنِّيbecause I
هَدَيْتُهُمُI guided them إلىto سُبُلِpaths of الرَّشادِright guidance
And my offense in my brothers' eyes is that I
My sin, according to my brethren, is that
Guided them to the paths of right guidance,
I guided them to righteous ways.
وقُلْتُand I said عَلَيْكُمُyou must hold fast بكِتابِto the Book of رَبِّيmy Lord
وسُنَّةِand the Sunnah of خَيْرِthe best مَهْدِيٍّrightly guided one وهادِيand guide
And said: Hold fast to my Lord's Book
And told them, by the Book of my Lord
And the Sunnah of the best of the rightly guided and the guides.
And the Sunna of the excellent Guide.
وَرَأْيand the opinion of الناسِpeople عِنْدَهماbefore both of them دَعُوهُleave it aside
فَبَعْضُfor some الرَّأْيopinion مِنْof جِنْسthe kind of الْعِنادِobstinacy
And before these two, set aside people's opinions,
Yet people's opinion, to them, is: "Leave it alone!"
For some opinions are a form of obstinacy.
Though some opinion springs from obstinacy.
وعندهماand before both of them دَعُواleave aside زَيْداًZayd وعَمْراًand Amr
إذَاif كانَاthe two are عَلَىon غيرother than السَّدَادthe right course
And before these two, set aside Zayd and Amr,
"Leave Zayd and 'Amr alone," they say,
If they are both off the right course.
"If they are not firmly on the right way."
فَقَوْلُfor the word of اللهِGod يَشْفِيcures كُلَّevery داءٍailment
ويَرْويand quenches thirst قَوْلُthe word of طَهَTa-Ha كُلَّevery صَادِيthirsty one
For God's word cures every ailment,
Thus God's Word cures every illness,
And Ta-Ha's word quenches the thirst of all who thirst.
And the Word of Taha slakes every thirst.
وصَحْبُand the companions of مُحَمّدٍMuhammad رَضُّواinvoke God's pleasure عَلَيْهمْupon them
فَصَحْبُfor the companions of مَحَمّدٍMuhammad خَيْرُthe best of الْعِبادِGod's servants
And Muhammad's companions—pray that God be pleased with them,
The company of Muhammad - God bless them!
For Muhammad's companions are the best of God's servants.
Were the best of all God's servants.
ولاand do not ترْمُواaccuse أَفاضلهُمْthe best among them بِنَقْصٍof shortcomings
فَلَسْتُمْfor you are not مِنْamong رِجالِmen of الاِنْتِقادِcriticism
And do not accuse the best among them of shortcomings,
Do not find fault with any of their nobles.
For you are not men qualified to criticize.
You are not qualified to criticize.
إلَهيmy God قَدْindeed أَغَاظُونيthey angered me بزُورٍwith falsehood
وأَنْكىand sorely wounded ماwhat أَشاعُوهُthey spread it فُؤاديmy heart
My God, they have angered me with falsehood,
O my God, they have hurt me with lies
And what they spread has sorely wounded my heart.
And made intolerable my anguish.
وأَبْكَىand made weep الْعَيْنَthe eye بَهْتٌslander نمَّقُوهُthey embellished it
وَطَالَand lengthened لِماbecause of what أَذَاعُوهُthey publicized it سُهاديmy sleeplessness
And the slander they embellished made my eye weep,
My eyes are tearful, slandered by their calumnies,
And my sleeplessness lengthened because of what they spread abroad.
Prolonged my nightly prayer by their rumors.
وَرامُواand they sought لاmay they not رُعواbe protected إطفاءَextinguishing عِلْميmy knowledge
وعابُواand they faulted ماwhat يُرْجِّحُهُfavors it اجْتِهاديmy independent reasoning
And they sought—may they not be protected—to extinguish my knowledge,
They tried to extinguish my knowledge, recklessly,
And they faulted what my independent reasoning favors.
And found fault with my lawful judgment.
فإنْso if يَنْصُرْgrants victory إِلهِيmy God عَنْin قَريبٍa short time
فَذَاthen this نصْرٌa victory عَلَىin وفقِaccord with السَّدادِwhat is right
So if my God grants victory before long,
If soon, my God, You give me victory,
Then this is a victory in keeping with what is right.
That will be a triumph for righteousness.
فَنَصْرِيfor my victory فيهin it إعْزازٌhonor لِدِينٍfor religion
ونَصْرِيand my victory فِيهin it دَفْعٌwarding off للفَسَادِof corruption
For in my victory lies honor for religion,
My triumph will honor the religion,
And in my victory lies the warding off of corruption.
And drive away corruption.
