The answer that I deem correct

is approved by the masters of criticism:

that the nearness of bodies in this abode

is union for those who love.

If one soul's joining with another were of use

    in love, despite prolonged separation,

all that people have recounted would be idle talk

    of estrangement, weeping, and sleeplessness.

What alone set our ribs ablaze

and made our tears flow like a valley's torrent

was our distance from abodes where dwelt

one who made passion dwell within bodies.

O my people! Is there any benefit for my people

in the meeting of souls and hearts?

    قَطَّعَ اللهُ قَلْبَ هذا الْبِعادِ

    It is separation alone that has torn hearts apart;

may God tear apart the heart of this separation!

For the stranger who settles in a land,

while his love is in another land,

and the distant one who dwells in a land

whose abode has spurned the heart's springtime—

what do you think—what good is the heart's harboring

    love, while passion keeps increasing?

Only a heart complains of separation

that was afflicted with love before its parting.

And when it is empty of love, then separation

is, to it, identical with union.

And the noble Prophet—may he be blessed

by our Lord—has made the point clear to us:

he said, “Being told is not like seeing firsthand,”

when issuing and presenting a matter.

And the illustrious Friend seeks understanding

from firsthand sight that strengthens belief.

So whoever says that peopling the abode of

love with love is useful in separation

is mistaken or deliberately misleading, in the view of anyone who

is among the intelligent and the discerning critics.

Take, O scholar of the age, an answer

whose pillar the hand of independent reasoning has raised.

And may the peace of the Source of Peace envelop you, O peerless one

among the descendants of al-Mustafa, the guiding Prophet.
