ياO غائِباًabsent one بَعْدَهْafter him الْسّلْوانُsolace ماnot حَضَراcame
يا غائِباً بَعْدَهْ الْسّلْوانُ ما حَضَرا
وَواصِلاًand keeping company لِسُهادِwith the sleeplessness of الْجَفْنِthe eyelid مذْsince هَجَراhe turned away
وَواصِلاً لِسُهادِ الْجَفْنِ مذْ هَجَرا
O absent one, after whose departure no solace came,
Yet keeping company with the eyelid’s sleeplessness ever since turning away.
رَحَلْتَyou departed عَنْfrom مُغْرَمٍa lovesick man حَلَّtook hold الْغَرامُpassion بهِin him
رَحَلْتَ عَنْ مُغْرَمٍ حَلَّ الْغَرامُ بهِ
قَرَّبْتَyou brought near بالبُعْدِthrough distance مِنْto أعْيانِهِhis eyes السَّهراsleeplessness
قَرَّبْتَ بالبُعْدِ مِنْ أعْيانِهِ السَّهرا
You departed from a lovesick man in whom passion had taken hold.
Through distance, you brought sleeplessness close to his eyes.
كَثَّرتَyou multiplied أَشْواقَlongings منthe one قَلَّلْتَyou diminished راحَتَهُhis rest
كَثَّرتَ أَشْواقَ من قَلَّلْتَ راحَتَهُ
قَصَّرْتَyou shortened لَذّةَthe joy of مَنْthe one طَوَّلْتَyou prolonged عَنْهُaway from him سُرَىnight journeying
قَصَّرْتَ لَذّةَ مَنْ طَوَّلْتَ عَنْهُ سُرَى
You multiplied the longings of one whose rest you diminished.
You shortened the joy of one from whom you prolonged your night journey.
