أَجَزْتُكَI have authorized you ياO عَبْدَservant of الرّحِيمthe Merciful بكُلِّfor all ماthat which
أَجَزْتُكَ يا عَبْدَ الرّحِيم بكُلِّ ما
تَجُوزُare permitted رِواياتيmy transmissions لَهُof it فيin الدَّفاتِرِthe written records
تَجُوزُ رِواياتي لَهُ في الدَّفاتِرِ
I have authorized you, O Abd al-Rahim, to transmit all that
I am entitled to narrate from the written records,
بِعِلْمِin the knowledge of رِواياتٍtransmissions وَعِلْمِand the knowledge of دِرايَةٍunderstanding
بِعِلْمِ رِواياتٍ وَعِلْمِ دِرايَةٍ
وعِلْمِand the knowledge of وجاداتٍreports found in writings صَحيحِsound القَنَاطِرِthe bridges
وعِلْمِ وجاداتٍ صَحيحِ القَنَاطِرِ
in the science of transmission and the science of understanding,
and knowledge of reports found in writings, with sound bridges.
أَلاَtake heed فَارْوِthen transmit عَنّيfrom me ماwhat بَلَغْتُI have attained رِوايَةًthrough narration
أَلاَ فَارْوِ عَنّي ما بَلَغْتُ رِوايَةً
مِنَof العِلْمِknowledge فيat وِرْدٍa watering place لَهُfor it أوor مَصادِرِpoints of departure
مِنَ العِلْمِ في وِرْدٍ لَهُ أو مَصادِرِ
Take heed, then: transmit from me what I have attained through narration
of knowledge, whether at its watering place or its points of departure.
وَماand whatever كانَwas مُحْتاجاًin need إلىof طُولِlengthy دُرْبَةٍpractice
وَما كانَ مُحْتاجاً إلى طُولِ دُرْبَةٍ
سَتَبْلُغُهُyou will attain it يَوْماًone day بغُدْرَةِby treachery (likely a typo for 'by power') قادِرone who is able
سَتَبْلُغُهُ يَوْماً بغُدْرَةِ قادِر
And whatever requires long practice,
you will attain it one day by the [power] of one who is able.
وكُلُّand all أسانِيدِيmy chains of transmission حَوَاهاcontained them مُؤَلَّفٌa compiled work
وكُلُّ أسانِيدِي حَوَاها مُؤَلَّفٌ
غَدَاhas become عِنْدَin ظَنِّيmy estimation تُحْفَةًa precious gift للأكابِرِfor the eminent
غَدَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّي تُحْفَةً للأكابِرِ
All my chains of transmission are contained in a compiled work,
which has become, in my estimation, a precious gift for the eminent.
فإنْso if رُمْتَyou seek إسْناداًa chain of transmission تَرَاهُyou will find it مُحَرّراًaccurately recorded
فإنْ رُمْتَ إسْناداً تَرَاهُ مُحَرّراً
بِهِin it لقَدِيمِto the earlier among الناسِpeople أوor للأَواخِرِto later generations
بِهِ لقَدِيمِ الناسِ أو للأَواخِرِ
If you seek a chain of transmission, you will find it accurately recorded
therein, reaching people of old or those of later times.
وشَرْطيand my condition عَلَيْكَupon you اليَوْمَtoday شَرْطُthe condition of أماثِلِيmy peers
وشَرْطي عَلَيْكَ اليَوْمَ شَرْطُ أماثِلِي
لِمِثْلَكَfor one like you فاجْعَلْهُso make it كَبَعْضِlike one of الذّخائِرِthe treasures
لِمِثْلَكَ فاجْعَلْهُ كَبَعْضِ الذّخائِرِ
My condition upon you today is the condition my peers set
for one like you; so count it among the treasures.
وَجانِبْand keep away منَfrom التَّصْحِيفِmisreading written letters واللَّحْنِand grammatical error جانِباًa distance
وَجانِبْ منَ التَّصْحِيفِ واللَّحْنِ جانِباً
وكُنْand be لِخطَاءof errors in القَوْلِspeech أَعْظَمَthe greatest هاجِرِone who shuns
وكُنْ لِخطَاء القَوْلِ أَعْظَمَ هاجِرِ
Keep your distance from textual misreadings and grammatical errors,
and be most resolute in shunning errors of speech.
وأمَاand as for توالِيفِيmy writings وإنْeven though كانَis عَدُّهاtheir number
وأمَا توالِيفِي وإنْ كانَ عَدُّها
كَثِيراًlarge فماyet not ذِكْريmy mentioning لَهاof them فيamong المفَاخِرِgrounds for boasting
كَثِيراً فما ذِكْري لَها في المفَاخِرِ
As for my writings, though their number is
large, I do not mention them by way of boasting.
وَإنّيand indeed I أَرَاهاsee them قَاصِراتٍfalling short وإِنَّنِيand indeed I
وَإنّي أَرَاها قَاصِراتٍ وإِنَّنِي
إذَاwhen حَقَّقَinvestigate الأَقْوامُpeople أَقْصَرُthe most deficient قاصِرِone who falls short
إذَا حَقَّقَ الأَقْوامُ أَقْصَرُ قاصِرِ
Indeed, I see them as falling short; and I myself,
when people investigate, am the most deficient of those who fall short.
فإنْso if شِئْتَyou wish تَرْويهاto transmit them رَوَيْتَyou may transmit فإنّنِيfor indeed I
فإنْ شِئْتَ تَرْويها رَوَيْتَ فإنّنِي
أَبْحَتُI have opened حِماهَاtheir protected domain نُهْبَتةًas plunder (apparent misspelling) للنّواظِرِfor gazing eyes
أَبْحَتُ حِماهَا نُهْبَتةً للنّواظِرِ
If you wish to transmit them, you may do so, for I
have opened their protected domain as plunder for gazing eyes.
