بِلا فُؤادٍ يا بَنِي مالِكِ
Give back my heart—the young man cannot live
Give back my heart; a young man cannot live
without a heart, O sons of Mālik!
without a heart, O sons of Malik.

يَنْتَصِفُ الممْلوكُ من مالِكِ
No—and may God seize my beloved!—for
May God not hold my beloved to account, for
a bondsman can win no redress from a master.
a slave cannot obtain redress from a master.

Longing for Najd has killed me, while
Longing for Najd has destroyed me, yet
its dweller is unaware of the man who is perishing.
its dweller is unaware of the one who perishes.

فَضَلَّ ذا المسْلَكُ بالسالِكِ
I left it, seeking the encampments of al-Liwā,
I left it, seeking the dwellings of al-Liwa;
and this path led the wayfarer astray.
so this path led the traveler astray.

ظَفِرْتُ بالْمَطْلُوبِ من ذَلِكِ
I ended up neither this nor that, nor
I ended up with neither this nor that, nor
did I attain what I sought from all that.
did I gain from that what I sought.
